חג השבועות הוא אחד משלושת הרגלים
שאנו מצווים מן התורה לעלות לרגל לבית המקדש בחג זה עולים לירושלים על מנת הביא ביכורים מכל מה שגידלנו אם זה מוצרים חקלאים ואם זה צאן ובקר וזאת כאות תודה על השפע בו בורכנו ולכן אחד משמות החג הוא חג הביכורים באמת.
כמו הרבה חגים יהודים גם חג זה נועד לציין אירוע משמעותי בחיי העם. הפעם מדובר על אירוע מאוד חשוב בו קיבלו בני ישראל את התורה בהר סיני.
כלומר מאוסף של כמה שבטים הפכנו לשבט אחד גדול עם קודקס חוקים אחד שמנחה את כולם.
לחג זה יש הרבה מנהגים כמו לאכול מאכלי חלב בגלל שחוקי הכשרות עוד לא נמסרו ולכן לא יכלו לאכול בשר ויש אומרים בגלל שהתורה נמשלה לחלב שנחשב לטעים ומזין.
בחג השבועות גם קוראים את מגילת רות שבה מספרים איך רות קיבלה עליה את הדת היהודית מבחירה והתחתנה עם בועז שבעצם ממנה תיווסד שושלת בית דוד.
קוראים לחג שבועות כי מגיעים לחג אחרי ספירה של 7 שבועות מהיום הראשון של פסח. בחג הפסח יצאנו ממצרים ובשבועות אנו מקבלים את התורה.
מכאן בא השם השני של החג, חג מתן תורה והשם השלישי בא לציין את האספקט החקלאי הקשור לעונת השנה ונקרא חג הקציר זאת כמו חגים נוספים המציינים את המועדים החקלאים, לדוגמא חג הסוכות הוא גם חג האסיף וחג הפסח הוא חג האביב וכדו'..
שם נוסף אחרון וחביב לחג הוא חג המים שהתורה נמשלה להם לרמוז שבלעדיה אין חיים.
