TOP 5 Japanese food you should try! (Other than SUSHI!)
Japanese food has been a global trend for a while. Yet, many people still think that the only typical Japanese food is sushi! In fact, we (Japanese) love sushi but we don’t eat is everyday or in a weekly basis as it is expensive! So, most commonly, people eat sushi on special occasions, parties or when you want to prize yourself.
Here you can find the TOP 5 Japanese food that Japanese people actually eat (quite often).
Let me know if you have tried any of them!!
1. Ramen (ラーメン)
No, I’m not talking about the instant ramen that so many people eat. When traveling around the world, I’ve seen so many instant ramen (for example: Maruchan, Demae Ramen from Nissin, etc.). They are good and easy to prepare, but the “Ramen” you can eat in Japan at Ramen restaurants (ラーメン屋) are at different level. The soup has a lot more favour, and the noodles are just amazing! They are not expensive at all, so when you go to Japan, you definitely should try it!
2. Miso-shiru (みそ汁)
Miso-shiru is a soup and it should be considered as a side dish. We eat it very often in breakfast or lunch. The basic ingredient is “Miso”, which is a fermented soybeans paste. In Japan we say that each family has its own miso-shiru recipe. The most common ingredients are: Tofu, spring onion and wakame (a type of seaweed). Yet, some people also add, onion, eggs, small fishes…etc. (some combinations are actually quite strange even for us)
Miso-shiru became a very popular soup especially among vegetarians and models as it is considered to be a great Probiotic.
3. Japanese curry (カレー)
I wrote it as Japanese curry to differentiate from the traditional Indian curry. They are similar but you should consider it as two different dishes. Japanese curry is less spicy compared to the Indian one. This is a very popular dish among adults and children. We all love curry and I’ve never met someone that dislikes it!
Even though we have our curry, it does not mean that we do not eat Indian curry. Actually, there are many Indian restaurants in Japan (especially in Tokyo and other big cities) , and they are very successful.
4. Soba (そば)
Soba is buckwheat noodles typical of Japanese cuisine. It is eaten both cold and hot and is usually served with various toppings and sauces (usually we use Tsuyu made with dashi, mirin and soy sauce). For the toppings, the most common ones are spring onions, nori and also Tempura!
5. Omuraisu (オムライス)
If you like Anime, maybe you know about it. (If you are interested in anime, you can also check this link: https://steemit.com/hive-161179/@cappusan/top-5-anime-series-you-should-watch-if-you-have-netflix-or-not-20-payout-to-japansteemit)
