Exhibition of Nihon-ga paintings by Madhu Jain
Last week i attended Nihon-ga paintings exhibition organized by The Japan Foundation, New Delhi. It was a week long exhibition of traditional Nihon-ga paintings by a Indian artist named Madhu Jain.
About the Artist:
Madhu Jain (69) born Jaipur, Rajasthan. Recd her Diploma in Fine Arts from Sarda Ukil School of Arts, New Delhi. She studied & researched japanese techniques of paintings in Tokyo. She was selected at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tokyo seven times. She specialises in portraying her style in the unique technique of Nihonga.
About Nihon-ga paintings:
Nihonga is based on painting styles that have evolved for over a thousand years. The materials used are also traditional elements developed during that long history. In general, the support is paper, silk, wood, or plaster, to which sumi ink, mineral pigments, white gofun (a white pigment made from pulverized seashells), animal or vegetable coloring materials, and other natural pigments were applied, with nikawa, an animal glue, as the adhesive. Gold and other metals (in gold leaf and other forms) were also effectively incorporated in paintings.
