10 years in the making, my journey to Japan as a Drum and Bass DJ, "Tokyo Splendor".10年ぶりに、ドラム＆ベースDJとしての日本への旅、「東京スプレンダーです」

December was an incredibly busy month. It always is though right with the holidays and NYE? When I got back to Japan I had to get ready for Living Floor, Structure, Structure DJs had been asked to DJ a Super New Year's Eve party, DJ Krust had cancelled on 06s so I was asked to play at Womb again! and I would meet my girlfriend/wife at Drum and Bass Sessions. The end.

Seriously though, first up was Living Floor. It was a new event put on by a promoter named Kaneko who had just returned from the UK. The headliner was Ajapai who was becoming a big DJ. I was introduced to Kaneko by an American named Joe. Joe was a half Japanese guy from Texas working in IT and was also a DnB DJ. He and I hit it off right away. We had a lot in common and back then there weren't as many foreigners in Tokyo so it was nice to be able to talk to someone from back home, especially a junglist. (A junglist is someone who loves DnB)

真面目に、最初はLiving Floorだった。それは、英国から戻ったばかりの金子さんのプロモーターの上に置かれた新しい出来事でした。ヘッドライナーはAjapaiで、大きなDJになりました。私は金子にアメリカ人のジョーによって紹介されました。ジョーはテキサス出身の半分の日本人男性でITに携わり、DnB DJだった。彼と私はすぐにそれを打ちました。私たちはたくさんの共通点を持っていたし、東京には多くの外国人がいなかったので、帰宅している人、特にジャングリストと話すことができて良かったです。（junglistはDnBを愛する人です）

Living floor was a big success and so Joe asked us to play their New Year's Eve Super party that consisted of Asia, Vuenos, P and Neo. It was going to be an epic event and celebration. Of course we said yes.

With the success of Living Floor Kaneko offered me some piece work producing a ring tone for Yamaha. Living Floor was going to release a CD and Yamaha was somehow involved. They wanted to have some ringtones produced as well to coincide with the CD release. So I hit the home studio, Reason 3.0 and whipped one up. I think I was paid $100 for it too. That helped out a lot because other than Structure I had no source of income in Japan. I would actually sell my CD's in front of Hot Wax for $10 on the weekends while also promoting our events. I would usually sell 3-5 CDs a day so that helped out too.

Structure was actually the same night as Living Floor. I played Structure first then went to play at LF. They were down the street from each other so it was pretty easy to get there.

At Structure we had Type-D who was the manager at HotWax records and Keisuke from Dublin/06s as guest Djs. Once again the event was packed and we noticed a lot of new faces. One face in particular was a guy named "Oshima". He would be the downfall of Structure and the name of a song by Klute! He was a troubled, rich guy whose father abandoned him. Looking back I feel bad for the guy, but at the time didn't.

ストラクチャーではHotWaxレコードのマネージャーだったType-DとゲストDjsとしてDublin / 06sのKeisukeがいました。もう一度イベントが盛り上がり、多くの新しい顔に気付きました。一人の顔は特に「大島」という男でした。彼は構造の崩壊とKluteの歌の名前になるだろう！彼は父親が彼を捨てた、悩ましい、豊かな人だった。振り返ると、私はその男のために悪いと感じるが、当時はそうではなかった。

Two weekend later it was was 06s at Womb. While looking into my archives I came across the old JungleWeb, a calendar website of all DnB events in Tokyo and it is still up! http://www.jungleweb.com/cal/?2001.12 I can't believe after all these years it is still running. I will be listing my event, Crypto Night on it in March. Anyway, I was playing on the main floor and Yujiro, Jun and Asykaga were in the lounge, 1st floor. It was another night of pure fun.

The following night was another massive DnB party called "Drum And Bass Sessions". This was the older DnB party in Tokyo. Dj Craze, the DMC Turntablist Champion was playing and he was playing DnB! He got into DnB for a while and it was super fun to watch him mix and scratch. The crowds would go wild because he added a new element to DnB.

The real treat though was seeing my wife whom I had met several months earlier, but she wasn't interested back then. This time though I was making a name for myself and so I tried hitting on her again. It worked! I ended up giving her a bunch of my drinks and asked her out on a date. She said yes and that's for another time.
