The rose magic just won’t stop If you’re an introvert like me, this time of year can be overwhelming. Gatherings, events, long, sunny days stirring your body from its rest from 5 am to 10 pm. Not that I’m not grateful for the abundance of early summer, but it’s easy to get lost in the constant yang energy of this season. Here’s where roses come in as a serious self-love ally for me. They not only represent love and fruitfulness and the beauty and abundance of the earth as we approach the solstice, but they invite you to slow down, get lost in the patterns of the petals, be mesmerized by their colors, let their aroma invite you into another world. Spending time with them is central to staying grounded for me during the season of fire, and self-care is especially important during times of overwhelm. I took the first rose bath of the season recently and, even in the chaos of opening a studio, opening my books (wow y’all are great), working full time, and entertaining out of town guests, immersing my body in petals made it all stop for a few moments. It reminds you that Gaia has your back, and gives us more beauty than we even know what to do with if we just slow down and look. Thanks, roses. You’re pretty great. This iconic daisy is native to temperate Europe but has made itself at home in many habitats worldwide. She blooms starting in early summer and continues through the summer season, with some cultivars blooming again in the fall. Daisies are great for attracting pollinators and, of course, making daisy chains! Is it even summer if you don’t make yourself a daisy crown?

These soon-to-be roses are especially susceptible to pests like aphids, which have been worse than usual for my roses this year. Good thing there are ladybugs! We released some ladybugs into the garden yesterday and they immediately went to work eating the aphid eggs and saving the buds from becoming bug snacks. We were rewarded with a new bloom this morning! This particular branch fell off our neighbor’s rose bush; I would never have the heart to pluck buds off the bush before they bloom (wow, alliteration party up in here today!) Anybody have other tips for dealing with aphids and other rose pests?
