That One Time I Got Lost In The Desert - Part ThreesteemCreated with Sketch.

So now we're in the Jimmy,

speeding through the desert, and the only thing we can see outside the truck is the small patch of road illuminated by the headlights. It was just like this.

It didn't take long for everyone's predictions to come true.

Sean stopped the truck at a spot where other car tracks crossed the road.

And he says, "Which way do we go?"

"I have no idea man. I'm just along for the ride," I said, a bit sarcastically, as I often was in those days.

"OK. I guess we'll just go right here and see where we end up. They've all got to end up on some major road."

"OK," said the guy who was just along for the ride.

So we took the path the veered off to the right. And then the process repeated a couple of times. We came to a crossroads, Sean decided which way to go, and we traveled on.

Until we came to a very wide and deep road crossing out path. Suddenly, we're going downhill a bit. And this road is a bit sandy in the middle, so Sean's two wheel drive Jimmy is slowing down a bit as it's losing traction. And then, it's stuck in one spot, and the wheels are just spinning. And spinning. I guess that's what can happen when you try to drive across a dry riverbed in the desert.

"Well, I guess we should try to dig it out of the sand," I said. Or maybe Sean said.

So we got out, and we did our best trying to dig the sand out from around the tires. But there was just more sand underneath. We kept digging and trying to get the truck to move for about an hour. But it was futile. The truck wasn't going anywhere.

"Well, I guess we'll just have to walk the rest of the way," says Sean, and grabs his stuff out of the truck.

And this is the part where I decided I wasn't just a passenger along for the ride anymore.

"No. We're not going anywhere. Let's just sleep in the truck and try to get help tomorrow. We'll only get more lost."

But he wasn't having it. He started walking the rest of the way across the riverbed. And at this point I had to get really serious. I was considering knocking the guy out, for his own survival.

But after getting to the top of the other side of the riverbed and seeing the vast desert stretching for miles and miles all around, he came to his senses.

"Yeah, you're probably right. Let's just sleep in the truck and try to get help tomorrow," he said, thankfully.

So we spent an uncomfortable night trying to get some sleep sitting in the front of a 1980s GMC Jimmy. I guess we were camping after all.

Check back soon for part four.
