"A Love Supreme by John Coltrane" (1965)

in #jazz4 years ago (edited)

Never before in the musical history of a jazz artist, (with the exception of Miles Davis), has he had as much influence in musical genres as different as the great John Coltrane has been; An example of this is its influence on the style of the "canterbury scene", fusion, avant-garde, minimalism, bossa nova, trip-hop, and a long etc.

Coltrane always had a stamp of his own that distinguished him from others, which consisted of breaking rules in every sense of the word and of seeking a constant spiritual balance. This is more noticeable in his last period, with the records he recorded for the "Impulse label". He was always an artist determined to abandon the conventional guidelines of modern jazz and to follow other paths such as avant-garde music and free jazz; just like other geniuses of the time did such as: Albert Ayler, Archie Sheep, Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, among others.

With his trio of musicians since 1960, made up of Mcoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison, he would record what is now his best-known work, "A Love Supreme", composed as a suite, divided into four sections and all based on a chord ... All the pieces are quite balanced in terms of syncopated rhythms with certain winks to free-jazz and a touch of rock and roll.

In "Acknowledgment" we hear the deep voice of a meditative Coltrane reciting the album's title multiple times and a spectacular work by Jones on drums. "Resolution" has a mantic opening where certain elements of Indian music predominate and where Tyner further explains his twelve-tone style. The last two pieces are like a kind of musical exorcism where everyone seems to represent bravery and catharsis through their respective instruments, just listen to the drums in "persuance" ... =)
