Here's To Hoping No One Remembers - 5a

Cocked my head when walking past him.

Never been sure if he's the useless type without home training that dont know how to greet elders.

Or just a weird skinny little kid that's just suffering from social anxiety and teenage awkwardness.

"What's up" I asked.

"Fine"

Then he added

"I fit get N50 from you?"

Not even the normal passive aggressive "anything for your boy?" begging style of Nigerian hood thugs

Certainly not a shy nor awkward dude.

Just another run of the mill bastard at best.

But being in a good mood, couldnt help but nod.

"What do you want to use it for?"

"I want to buy Garri" he answered

"Oya now come and get one cup let me pay."

But why did I do that?

Why didn't I just dip my hand in my pocket and free him the fity bucks?

Nollywood superstitious movies and my mother's admonitious "give money to a stranger and they will use it to ruin you" trope kept ringing in my head

Despite how rational yours truly love to claim, I just went with my instincts.

That's the thing with human instinct.

Daniel Kahneman calls it system 1.

You dont think.

You just act.

But for you to act there are preliminary levels of thinking that have been processed underground either from your own experience or from evolution itself.

An over practiced system 2 certainly becomes system 1.

Maybe if people's life or business didnt become shit after they gave strangers money over the years, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Maybe.
