RE: What kind of journalist is he?
I would suggest getting an unexpected graduate degree. I got an MBA before becoming a journalist - and it has served me better in getting a job, I think, than an MFA or a journalism degree. Newsrooms want people who know how to plumb various aspects of the world. A law degree, a science degree, an MBA or any other profesional (or profesional-ish) degree helps you learn how to navigate corridors that other journalists don't know.
