"Journey to the West" is the first romantic chapter-by-chapter novel about gods and demons in ancient China. None of the existing Ming editions of "Journey to the West" with 100 chapters have the author's signature. Along the way, he experienced hardships, subdued demons and monsters, and experienced 81 difficulties. He finally arrived in the West to see the Tathagata Buddha, and finally the five saints became true. The novel is based on the historical event of "Tang Monk's Journey to the West". Through the author's artistic processing, it deeply depicts the social reality of the Ming Dynasty.

Sun Wukong (Monkey Heart)

Sun Wukong, also known as Sun Xingzhe and Wukong, was revered as the Monkey King by the monsters in Huaguo Mountain, and was named "Great Sage Equaling Heaven" by the Jade Emperor.
There is a fairy stone on the top of the Flower and Fruit Mountain. Due to the long-term absorption of the essence of nature, earth, sun and moon, a stone monkey jumped out of it one day. He discovered the Water Curtain Cave on the Flower and Fruit Mountain and was revered as the king by the monkeys, so he was called the "Monkey King". He was accepted as a disciple by Bodhi Patriarch and learned powerful skills. He also broke into the Dragon Palace in the East China Sea and seized the "Ruyi Golden Cudgel" as his weapon. After that, he held the golden cudgel and proclaimed himself "The Great Sage Equaling Heaven". He made a big fuss in the Heavenly Palace and defeated 100,000 heavenly soldiers and generals. The Jade Emperor asked the Buddha of the West to rescue him, and the Buddha cast a spell to suppress Wukong under the Five Elements Mountain. Five hundred years later, Guanyin Bodhisattva brought Wukong to Buddhism and asked Tang Sanzang, a great monk of the Tang Dynasty who went to the West to obtain the Buddhist scriptures, to rescue him. Wukong has since become Tang Sanzang's eldest disciple. Along the way, he and his junior fellow apprentice Zhu Bajie and Monk Sha protected their master as they traveled through mountains and rivers, subdued various demons and monsters such as the White Bone Demon, the Spider Demon, and the Bull Demon King, and overcame 81 difficulties. Finally, he successfully obtained the true scriptures and achieved the right result. He himself was named "Fighting Buddha" by Tathagata.

Tang Monk

Tang Monk, whose surname is Chen, nickname is Jiang Liuer, Buddhist name is Xuanzang, and Sanzang is given the surname Tang by Emperor Taizong of Tang. He is the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi, the second disciple of Tathagata Buddha. He is a posthumous child. Due to the miserable and bizarre experiences of his parents, he became a monk and grew up in a temple since he was a child. He became a monk in Jinshan Temple and eventually moved to a famous temple in the capital to settle down and practice. Tang Monk is diligent and studious, with a high level of comprehension, and stands out among the monks in the temple. He was eventually selected by Emperor Taizong of Tang, sworn brothers with him, and went to the West to obtain scriptures.
On the way to obtain the scriptures, Tang Sanzang successively subdued three disciples: Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng, and named them: Wukong (named by Bodhi Patriarch, Tang Sanzang gave the nickname Xingzhe), Wuneng, and Wujing. Later, with the assistance of the three disciples and the white dragon horse, he went through untold hardships and finally retrieved 35 true scriptures from the Leiyin Temple in the West. With perfect merits, he was promoted to a high position and was granted the title of Sandalwood Merit Buddha.
Tang Sanzang was kind-hearted, devoted to Buddhism, honest and kind, but also cowardly.

Zhu Bajie (Mu Mu)

Also known as Zhu Ganglie and Zhu Wuneng. Originally the "Tianpeng Marshal" in the Heavenly Palace, he was in charge of the Tianhe Navy. Because he got drunk at the Queen Mother's Yaochi Peach Banquet, he broke into Guanghan Palace and tried to tease the fairy Nichang. Nichang refused to obey him again and again, hiding from him and feeling unhappy. The inspector reported this to the Jade Emperor, angering the Jade Emperor and punishing him to go down to the human world. But he was born into a pig by mistake and became a wild boar. He cultivated into a spirit and grew into a pig face with a human body. He had the memory before reincarnation and the weapon rewarded by the Jade Emperor. He seized Gao Cuilan, the third daughter of the Gao family, in Gao Village, was subdued by Sun Wukong and followed Tang Monk to the West to obtain scriptures. In the end, he got the right result and was named "Altar Cleansing Envoy". He is lazy, honest, timid, greedy for petty gains and lustful, but he is also full of comedy and sometimes makes contributions.
Zhu Bajie's weapon is the Nine-toothed Rake, the full name of which is Shangbaoqinjin Palladium. Zhu Bajie only knows 36 changes of Tiangang number.

Sha Monk (Sha Monk)
Also known as Sha Wujing and Sha Monk. He was originally the general of the curtain in the heavenly palace. Because he broke the colored glass cup at the Peach Banquet, which angered the Jade Emperor, he was demoted to the human world and became a monster by the Liusha River, suffering from the pain of thousands of arrows piercing his heart. Later, he was subdued by Tang Monk and his disciples, and was mainly responsible for leading the horse along the way. After achieving the right result, he was named "Golden Body Arhat". He is honest and hardworking.
White Dragon Horse (Yulong)
Also known as Yulong (Little Dragon King). He was originally the son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the West Sea. Because he set fire to the pearls in the palace, his father reported him to the Jade Emperor in the Heavenly Palace for disobedience. The Jade Emperor sent people to beat him 300 times and hung him in the air, waiting for processing. When Guanyin Bodhisattva met him halfway on her way to the East to find the pilgrims, she pleaded with the Jade Emperor to save Yulong and let the pilgrims in the West to serve as a footman. Therefore, the white dragon horse also redeemed the sins of his previous life by taking on a guilty body. Compared with Sha Seng, he should be guilty of a serious crime. "Arson" is a deliberate act, which is different from "mistake" which has subjective intention; "Pearl" is a rare treasure, and "Glass cup is just an ordinary vessel, so the degree of loss is completely incomparable. It is because Yulong does not know how to cherish the precious treasures that he needs to change from the admirable "Jade Dragon" in his previous life to an ordinary "white horse" that anyone can ride in this life. Compared with the transformation of the other three brothers from gods to monsters and then to humans, Yulong went directly from god to beast. On the way to the west to obtain scriptures, he walked on all fours and was often beaten by others. He experienced what "cherishing" means.
