When IOHK implemented an update to the Daedalus wallet the value of Cardano shot up very quickly. It has since been rising in value as IOHK prepares to implement Shelly and decentralize Cardano.

Currently the Cardano network is controlled by IOHK, the Cardano foundation, and Emurgo. Once Shelly is live people will be able to stake their Cardano holdings in order to secure the network.

The staking protocol is Ouroboros which has been in development for four years.

While many projects try to launch their protocols very quickly IOHK has sought out peer review in an effort to create a robust protocol that can meet the demands of the world.

IOHK has been working on fake stake resistance. A fake stake is a weakness that some Proof of Stake cryptocurrencies have.

This is the ability of someone to stake little or no coins in order to attack the network. This is the main argument for proponents of proof of work who think that holding any assets in a proof of stake network is not secure.

Another issue that those that prefer proof of work have is that proof of stake centralizes all minted coins into the hands of those that have the most funds staked.

The Ouroboros protocol has a system in place that is designed to distribute all minted coins fairly among all miners even if they do not hold a large stake.

Ouroboros has been designed to fully decentralize the network among all nodes. There could be two main reasons why the value of Cardano is rising.

The obvious one is that people are accumulating Cardano in preparation to stake. There could also be people accumulating in order to dump after staking goes live on Shelly.

There is a possibility that there are people who have bought Cardano with the intent to dump it soon after staking goes live. It will be fascinating to see who will win from these two factions.

Whatever happens to the value of Cardano in the short term after staking is activated on Shelly is yet unknown.

What we do know is that the creator of Cardano is one of the original founders of Ethereum which is one of the most influential cryptocurrencies of today.
