The Highest Cliffs in Ireland Are on an Island You Can Drive To

Achill Head in Co. Mayo is the largest of Ireland's offshore islands, and it is close enough to the mainland that a bridge was built to it in 1887. That structure has been replaced twice since, with the newest being completed in 2008.

The island is a popular destination for outdoor and water sports enthusiasts. Keel Beach, which is just behind the right-hand ridge of Croaghaun, is a renowned surfing and kite surfing spot.

The island is also home to the highest sea cliffs in Ireland, which are visible in this image on the left side of the mountain peak of Croaghaun. Rising 688 metres, the cliffs are spectacular, but are not accessible by road and thus don't see many visitors.
