Tufas Of Mono Lake, California (3 photos)

in #landscapephotography7 years ago (edited)

Mono Lake in California, USA, has some pretty incredible tufa formations. I'm not going to go into detail about the tufas or the lake but if you want to know more info, please check out these links: About Mono Lake and About Mono Lake's Tufas.

This top photo is an entry for @czechglobalhosts 7 World’s Continents Photo Challenge - North American Friday week #33. More about that contest can be found HERE.

The above photo was shot at sunset in May of 2010 on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105mm lens set at 24mm. The ISO was 50, the aperture was f20, in order to maintain a good depth of field, and the shutter speed needed to be 2.5 seconds with those other settings. I believe a graduated neutral density filter was used, but to be honest, I don't remember as I shot it eight years ago. I was only there for one afternoon/evening so I got incredibly lucky with a colorful sunset.

Below is what the tufas look like during the daytime. While out there photographing the tufas, I saw another photographer try to climb one of them to get a better angle for his shot. A large chunk of the tufa broke off when he did this. Don't be that guy... What an asshat!

This is what the tufas looks like up close. They have a pretty cool texture to them. However, they are not that solid so again, if you ever go to Mono Lake, please don't try to climb them.

I do love that first photo the way the sky
and earth reflect each other with the spires
of rocks and clouds!

For some reason they remind me of
fresh water corals in a way.

Beautiful!

Yes, they do look like corals! And yeah, that was very cool how the clouds and tufas reflected each other like that. Thank you!

I've never seen these formations in all the time of living in California. Thank you for sharing this cool natural phenomena.

No problem @bluefoxy. Yeah, they are definitely worth visiting if you're ever in that area of Cali.

first time I've known about TUFA, such beautiful creation of nature. :)

Cool! Yeah, they are pretty wild looking. Have a great day @robiney!

Great shots @scottshots 😀 Those are some amazing formations!

Thank you @still-observer! They are super cool indeed. I need to go back and shoot them again sometime soon...

That light in the first shot is incredible Scott!

Right?! I was incredibly lucky to get that show while I was there.

Nice shots, but you should include a selfie so that we can have idea of scale.

Thank you! Next time...

It's amazing what water can do to rocks. And the different shapes that can be formed. I love the first shot, perfect one to put into the contest. The further the rocks go into the water in that one, the more they look painted. Just like the sky, absolutely gorgeous. And thanks for the advice about climbing, the first thing I thought when I saw them was to try and climb, but now I know better. Overall great post!!!!

Thank you @dohe2610! Yeah, definitely surreal and painting-like out there. I wish I had gotten a photo of the dude climbing. Don't do it, haha!

Haha that would have been so mean. Taking a picture of someone’s stupid mistake. Funny, but still mean.

Yeah, I just stood there looking shocked with my jaw on the ground instead...
