Baby sign language - our experience and thoughts

Recently, my fiancé, our two-month-old son and I have visited a workshop of baby sign language in Luxembourg.
The reason?
Trying to make sure that our son can start his communication process with simple signs, focused on its simple context.
My fiancé and I do not have the same mother tongue. I speak in Dutch to my son and she in Polish. By using our languages linked to the signs we are looking forward to seeing if our son will be able to understand us and communicate back.
What is needed?
Patience is needed, especially when raising a child more than one language. The expert in command told us that a child might learn using signs from the age of five months.
Important is the use of your theater skills in order to draw the attention of your child.
Of course, in our situation we focus a lot on the comfort of our child at the moment, but I like the idea of introducing sign language to him, since he will grow up in a multilingual environment.
Signs we have learned
We have learned the following signs during the first workshop:
HELLO
THANK YOU
I AM HAPPY
I AM SAD
I SEE YOU
MORE
At the end of the workshop, we closed with a song, which goes like this:
Hello (name of baby)! I am happy to see you!
Conclusion
We will attend four more workshops of baby sign language to learn more about this.
What kind of effect it will have on our son is something we will have to see. We believe that this is a good step for his own communication and comfort with us.

Onlangs hebben mijn verloofde, onze zoon van twee maanden en ikzelf een workshop over gebartentaal voor baby’s in Luxemburg bezocht
De reden?
Wij willen onze zoon helpen in zijn communcatieproces met het introduceren van simpele gebaren, gecontreerd op de simpele context.
Mijn verloofde en ik hebben niet dezelfde moedertaal. Ik spreek Nederlands en zijn Pools. Door onze talen te linken aan de gebaren zijn we benieuwd of onze zoon ons zal begrijpen en terug naar ons zal communiceren.
Wat is nodig?
Geduld is nodig, zeker in het geval dat een kind in meer dan één taal wordt opgevoed. De expert in commando vertelde ons dat het mogelijk is dat een kind vanaf vijf maanden een gebaar kan leren.
Belangrijk is het gebruik van je eigen toneelvaardigheden om zo de aandacht van je kind te trekken.
Op dit moment is onze zoon nog te jong en ligt te focus vooral op comfort, maar wij houden van het idee om onze zoon simpele gebarentaal te leren, zeker omdat hij in een meertalige omgeving zal opgroeten.

Op het einde van de workshop hebben we ook een liedje geleerd, welke als volgt gaat:
Hallo (naam)! Ik ben blij je te zien!
Conclusie
Wij zullen nog vier extra workshops in verband met gebarentaal voor babies bezoeken om hier meer over te leren. Welk effect het zal hebben op onze zoon is iets wat we later zullen zien. Wij geloven in ieder geval dat het een goede stap voor zijn communicatie en comfort met ons.
