My Lego Love Affair...

in #lego8 years ago (edited)

As a kid I played with Lego all the time, it was my favorite toy (and I'm sure many of you felt the same) but in my late teens I grew up and entered what we adult lego collectors call the "dark ages"

I was too cool to play with toys and quickly forgot about those little plastic bricks that I loved so much. Parties and women were much more important to me but deep down I always had a creative side that I couldn't shake. As I graduated college and entered into the film industry I couldn't help but feel that something was still missing. I loved being creative as a video editor, but I was frequently making what my clients wanted, and never what I imagined.

I'm not sure how most AFOL's (Adult Fan of Lego) came out of their dark ages, but I can imagine it started with a gift. for me, it was the Tower Bridge set from my Grandmother for Christmas in 2012 and I was floored! I couldn't wait to get home and build that set, and I didn't sleep until it was finished.

The following weeks I spent every moment reading, learning, and involving myself in the Lego community. And I learned a few things...

Fun Fact: Did you know that Lego is a better return on your investment than gold? (but not crypto)

Thats right, Lego retires sets every 2-4 years and once those sets are retired they're never reprinted. This has created a massive opportunity for investors to purchase sets, wait a few years, and flip them for almost double retail price even if its used. It's pretty awesome!

Because of this increased demand, Lego has become the worlds largest toy company, and because of this, they're now creating large, highly detailed sets specifically for Adults. They have so many themes: Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Simpsons, Fairgrounds, Marvel, DC, Dr. Who, Minecraft, Ferrari, VW, Porsche. In fact, on Monday they revealed a 4000 piece model of the Walt Disney World Cinderella Castle! It's quite incredible.

Anyways, if you're swimming in Steem/Bitcoin/Dash/Ethereum and you loved Lego as a kid, I'd recommend picking up a set and building again. It's incredibly relaxing and fun!

REMEMBER: If you're not sure what to get your significant other for Christmas or Birthday, consider a Lego set based on a franchise that they love...it's almost certainly going to be a slam dunk!

Sort:

Lego's as better than gold, I love it. Lego is the real store of value.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome! It makes sense though. They're highly intricate collections of thousands of specialized pieces designed by humans and officially licensed. Most children who get these sets eventually break everything down into a big bin, essentially creating hours of work to actually find every piece... Most sets are lost forever.

The Lego Super Star Destroyer would be so cool to have!

It's a fantastic set, so epic!
