Arguably lemon is the most versatile of all fruits, the lemon contains a wealth of health-enhancing properties. Originally used by the Romans to sweeten breath, the lemon is packed full of nutrients and is used today to treat a number of ailments.

Like other citrus fruits, lemons are powerhouses of antioxidant vitamin C, which helps to boost the immune system, assist the healing of wounds and strengthen the walls of blood capillaries. The high level of vitamin C in lemons means that they are vital for healthy skin and gums. It is a good source of flavonoids, such as quercetin, which boosts the effects of vitamin C, and are particularly important for the health of blood vessels and to prevent varicose veins.
Lemons contain limonene, a chemical that has been shown to slow the rate of cancer growth. Limonene also has antiseptic qualities to help to kill germs - one of the reasons that lemons are traditionally used as a gargle for sore throats and to treat infections of the respiratory tract. Lemons also have powerful antifungal properties. They are a popular ingredient in beauty products such as skin cleansers and hair conditioners, because, when used in treatments, lemon juice inhibits bacterial growth and is astringent, strengthening and toning. The fruit's dissolving and extracting qualities can also help in the topical treatment of skin infections, such as boils and abscesses.
As lemons are a silver stimulant, they can be used for detoxification purposes. Despite the sourness of lemon juice, it is a popular drink when diluted in warm water, with a cleansing taste few other fruits can match. During a brief detox fast, it quells the appetite and freshens breath. Being one of the most concentrated food sources of vitamin C, also makes it the ideal addition to a glass of water to help soothe a post-exercise dry throat. Try diluting freshly squeezed lemon juice with warm water and drinking it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning to give your metabolism a kick-start. However, take care not to drink the juice too often as it can have a detrimental effect on tooth enamel.
Lemons stimulate the gallbladder, which in turn aids liver and digestive function. Citric acid, which encourages healthy digestion, makes up 7 to 8 percent of a lemon, the highest concentration found in any fruit. Lemon can be used in a marinade or salad dressing, lemon juice tenderizes and breaks down some of the tough components of meat. Its calming effect on the stomach relieves bloating and heartburn. Lemons also have a slightly antibacterial effect, reducing the risk of discomfort in the intestines.
The health-giving properties of lemons can be utilized in many ways as the fruits make a great flavoring agent in drinks and foods, from baked foods to sauces. Lemon juice can be sprinkled onto peeled fruits, such as apples and bananas, to stop them from turning brown and its zest and pith can be added to casseroles, stews, and soups to give extra nutrients.
