Les Miserables Movie Review

Being "zoned" is one of the biggest fears of "millennials" these days. This is clearly visible on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Although the movie Les Misérables was released in 2012, most of us have been able to identify with the character of Eponine who became a martyr when it came to her love for Marius. The story took place in France, mainly in the city of Paris, during the restoration period around the 1800s. The film is derived from a French historical novel which bears the same name as the film. The title can be translated as "Les Misérables" and by this; this shows that the film is not a happy book because it shows the darker past of the French Revolution.

The film will take us through the lives of people who weren't quite recognizable by history. As said before, this is a film that shows a dark story - the downsides of the French Revolution. Since there was a war at the time, the innocent were very affected. It'll take us to the life of criminals, prostitutes, thugs, name it. They are clearly doing all of this to get out of poverty, to be able to feed themselves and survive their daily lives. This film does not focus solely on the history of the French Revolution. On the contrary, there are a lot of parallel stories. One of which is a love triangle that occurs between three young people. Marius, a young man who has fiery desires for a young woman named Cosette, who turns out to have the same interest in the young man. Eponine, for her part, sees Marius as the apple of his eye, but the feelings were not reciprocal and he remained like a one-sided love. However, although she knows that Marius cannot love her back as her lover, she has always been content with friendship and I adore her for it.

I believe that one of the factors why Marius did not give a chance to love Eponine is that they are not at the same level in the social hierarchy since he comes from a wealthy family whereas Eponine is not. The book that the movie was shot in was written about 155 years ago, which shows the presence of this perception and yet social discrimination still prevails at this time and time. There was this case where Marius pays Eponine for a favor but she refuses the money given to her. Although she declined the offer, she was blinded by her love for Marius and she was still doing him a favor.

The whole experience of watching the movie is great. It was very informative but not like the types of shots that are often boring. The idea of making a story film with a few side stories is a great idea to get young adults like me to know the story. The casting is perfect, the edits were super fine and the songs were perfect and they gave the film an identity. The actors were very effective because they knew how to convey the emotions and touch the spectators. Overall, I think this landmark movie is one of the classics when it comes to musicals.
