Democrat Andrew Cuomo finally has a worthy contender in the run for Governor of New York.

Libertarian candidate Larry Sharpe has raised over $100,000 in contributions for his campaign. His fellow candidates from the Republican party can only dream of that amount!

As you can see in the table below, Sharpe comes second in the race for largest amount of campaign contributions. The only candidate that has gotten a larger amount is current NY governor Andrew Cuomo with a whopping 12.7 million dollars.

Now, you might ask where this 12 million comes from... According to TimesUnion, the biggest contributors to Cuomo's campaign are real estate and capital investment businesses. Cuomo hauled in a major part of the contributions after he reached a "deal on New York City's rent regulations and the 421-a tax break program for developers".

Given that New York has the 2nd worst business climate in all of the United States, this once again shows that big business is often not interested in free market capitalism. Rather, they are only out for their own gain and don't hesitate to use a government gun to enforce laws that come to their own benefit. Corporatism at its finest.

Will Sharpe catch up to Cuomo?

He definitely has a long way to go still, but fortunately campaign contributions don't say everything anymore. With the Internet, reaching out to people directly has become so much easier than before, and Sharpe definitely seems to make use of social media to let the people of New York know that he's running for governor.
