Bali or MahaBali is a ruler, the hero of the Puranas (which is described in particular in the eighth song of the Bhagavata Purana ). The grandson of the great devotee Prahlada Maharaja . A descendant of Diti . Bali Maharaja's father was called Virocana, and his mother was Devamba. Bali Maharaja was brought up by his grandfather Prahlada - he bestowed on him devotion to the Absolute ( bhakti ) and a propensity for righteousness.

During the reign of Bali, peace and prosperity prevailed in his domain . Bali conquered the Earth , and also gained power over the paradise worlds. The universal gods and celestials turned to Visnu for support - he promised to give them power over their possessions. At this time, the guru of the asuras Sukracarya recommended Bali Maharaja to conduct a great sacrifice of the horse - ashwamedhi. During this ceremony, Visnu appeared, who appeared before the king in the guise of a dwarf boy. (In this incarnation, described in the first song of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the Absolute is known as Vamanadeva or Vamana.)

Lord Vamana asked Bali Maharaja for a part of the land, three steps in size. King Bali, despite the warnings of his teacher Shukracharya, that this was a trick, did not refuse the dwarf. Suddenly Vamanadev began to increase in size and the first step He covered the whole Earth and heavenly planets. By his second step, Vamanadev broke through the shell of the universe , from where a drop of the Causal Ocean leaked into the material world . This drop in the form of energy spread to the higher worlds, descending to Earth as the sacred river Ganges . The third step the Lord had nowhere to do. Then the king of Bali framed his head, bending over. As a reward, Vamanadev made Bali the lord of Patala (the system of the lower planets of the universe, namely Sutala).

This story is described in the eighth song of Srimad-Bhagavatam . Thanks to the touch of Vishnu's foot, Bali Maharaja became His devotee-Vaisnava. He is revered as one of the twelve mahajans , great saints.
