Oprah Winfrey was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 75th Golden Globes. She is the first black woman to receive this award and took the opportunity to address pressing issues of the day at her acceptance speech. Her speech was very well received and here are the key topics that she dealt with:

  1. The Impact of Racism on Dreams of the Oppressed
As a young girl she recalled her wonder at witnessing Sidney Poitier, then the first black man, accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award on television. Prior to this episode, she may not have believed that it was possible for a person of colour to attain such an honour.

  2. The Importance of the Free Press to Protect a Democracy Under Threat
Oprah paid tribute to journalists who strive to report on the truth for the benefit of all citizens of an open democracy when they are under tremendous threat by an administration that has exhibited a toxic range of bully tactics under the leadership of a deranged tyrant.

  3. The Endurance of Women Who Did Not Have a Voice Until Only recently
Oprah spoke about the abuse that women had to endure under various guises - largely by men who wielded power and authority. These were women who had to endure the abuse for such a long time for fear of losing their jobs that brought a pay check to feed the family and also to realise their dreams and aspirations.

  4. The Time is Up for Sexual Predators
Oprah declared with a powerful steadfast determination that the time has come to an end where the abuse of women at the hands of male sexual predators is tolerated. Many members of the audience were seen wearing pins that said "Time's Up".
