Listen / Read / Watch - #3 Sword and Scale

I love me some true crime. I can fall into sweet slumber to old episodes of Forensic Files. Friday night plans? Sorry, there's a killer episode of Dateline on.

Last spring, a friend of mine (who is equally kind of psycho), recommended I listen to a podcast she was obsessed with that tackled a lot of brutal themes, ranging from the dark web to serial killers to love stories that took a twisted turn. It sounded like a plan to me! I started listening the very next day while shoveling snow.

Hosted by Mike Boudet, the stories on Sword and Scale are true events. The podcast is a mix of storytelling style, recorded interviews and newscast and audio from courtrooms, trials and interrogation rooms. Information is shared from experts in various fields, audio clips of the perpetrator and/or the victim(s), as well as people in their communities. Each episode is unique in what it highlights, typically taking time to delve into the perpetrator's psyche and ponder why he/she made the choices they did.

Sometimes the topics are a bit heavy, but you can easily pick and choose episodes avoiding certain topics based on the description. Episodes are 60-90 minutes long and are perfect for car rides or during your workout. If only the woman next to me on the elliptical knew what I was listening to!

In the parting words of Mike Boudet...

hmm....this appeals to my closeted dark side! Gonna subscribe so I can listen on the way to work.

Give it a go and let me know what you think!

One of my favorites is the episode about Belle Gunness. Which is your favorite so far?

That's a good one! I really liked the one about hospitals being an ideal place to kill someone. It centered around a serial killer nurse! I should ask Kelly about that one.
