Who Moved My Cheese? | An Allegory to Reflect on Your Attitude Towards Change
Who Moved My Cheese?, a book written by Dr. Spencer Johnson, is a fable about four characters who live in a maze that all love cheese.
Let's call them Juan, Pepe, Emilio, and Ramon.
One day, they discovered that their old cheese suddenly disappeared. |
---|
Upon realizing this, Juan and Pepe eagerly navigated through the maze to find new cheese. Emilio, on the other hand, felt betrayed and kept complaining. He stayed put hoping that the old cheese would return. It feels risky moving out of a place where it used to have cheese. He has a point, and the Ramon realizes this.
However, Ramon didn't just sit there.
He still set out to look for new cheese. He writes what he learned on the wall so he has the options to trace his steps if he decides to come back. He also hopes that the writings on the wall would encourage the Emilio to follow him. |
---|
Soon, Ramon discovers new cheese, and he saw that Juan and Pepe were already there. Emilio still wastes his time complaining and hoping that things would go back to the way they are.
What's the "Cheese"?
The cheese represents what you want to have in life. This could be a financial goal, a dream job, or some sort of influence; but why was it moved? It's because things constantly change, so we must adapt. The more quickly we adapt, all the more that success will be at our reach.
Let me use an example that should be applicable to all of us.
Ruby is an author in Steemit. Every time she writes a post, she earns 6 dollars (~300 pesos) for her article. This was her cheese, and she loved it. |
---|
But then Steemit proposed a major change in their system. The amount of money an author earns is now based on the amount of engagement/comments each article has. Now, profits are at a record low for Ruby.
She spent weeks and weeks complaining about the new system. |
---|
She then realized that nothing good is going to happen if she continues blabbing about how stupid the new system is. She now focuses on engaging with her followers. On top of that, she often reads news so she can anticipate upcoming changes in the Steemit platform. Smell the cheese often so you know when it's getting old.
It's about being proactive.
Friends, the world is changing swiftly more than ever. Get ready for the cheese to move. Businesses get shut down every day. Bitcoin could suddenly be not #1 in terms of market cap. Policies could change in your workplace. It's out of our control. What we can control, however, is our principles. When you change what you believe, you change what you do! I wish you all the best in finding your cheese.
For now, I'm going to take a break and have myself some literal cheese ;)
Here's the animated version of the book:
I hope this article helped you develop a new perspective on how the world is changing. How about you? What's the biggest change you experienced and how did you adapt? Also, let me know if this picture format of story-telling is confusing, or if it helped you understand the lesson better.

PS: This week is my HUSTLE WEEK
I also wanted to share that I have set really ambitious goals for myself this week. One of them is to create well-researched, high-quality posts once every workday (Monday-Friday) of this week. I realized that haven't been posting as often as I wanted to. I included this in my post so you guys can hold me accountable :)
The first article of the hustle week, titled A Short Story that will Make You Question Your Decisions (3 min. read), received Top Nomination of the Day in Team Philippines's Daily Issue. I hope to get to @curie someday :D
If you're interested in my other articles, please check out the best article I've written so far: The 2-hour rule (Applying the genius of Einstein and Nietzsche). Once again, thank you so much for everyone's support :)
