LASIK my experience. Take it or leave it. 😊
Ever since I can remember I needed glasses or contacts. I remember being the kid in 3rd grade with the big thick glasses. I actually remember going to school one day not wearing glasses and my vision was blurry and the next day returning to school with glasses. I remember even back then feeling the shame of wearing glasses. As soon as I could I got contact lenses. That was definitely an ordeal. Sometime in 6th or 7th grade I got the courage to touch my eye and put contacts in. It literally took me a year to do that. I have always had a fear of anything coming remotely close to my eyes so it was somewhat of a miracle for me to put contacts in.
As soon as I had heard of LASIK I wanted to get it. Due to one thing or another I didn’t get it. Mostly because it was expensive and I was afraid. I made it to a couple of eye surgeon offices and chickened out. Until one day I went to this highly recommended eye surgeon Dr. Sandy T. Feldman in San Diego, CA. I went in for my initial appointment to see if I qualified and for me to see if I felt comfortable there. I really did I felt so comfortable with the staff and the doctor, I know it might sound funny but I knew I was in the right spot for me. The Doc was very thorough and explained everything, she sat with me answering all of my questions and didn’t rush me. The next time I went back I said goodbye to my contacts and my glasses.
On my surgery day I was nervous and anyone who says they were not are liars. To combat the nerves they give you a Valium before you go into the operating room. The day I went in there were two people before me. I remember hearing the nurse tell each patient what was going to happen before going in to the operating room and after the doors shut I remember trying to close my eyes and relax. Each person was in the operating room for only a couple of minutes and they walked out wearing funny glasses being led by the nurse. Then they called my name. I remember walking in with an excitement and being really freaked out. The doctor asked me to lay under this huge machine and she said to relax. I was really starting to freak out. She said each eye was going to take about 30 seconds, not to worry and not to move. She gave me a super soft teddy bear to hold on to. I tell you I have never been so attached to a stuffed animal in my life. I’m laying there and she puts this contraption on my eye to keep it open. She puts drops in my eye then lasered my eye to put the flap back and then started the surgery. I remember as soon as the flap was pulled back I could only see black and what looked like lightning flashes. Then I heard a loud laser sound that clicked and smelled something burning like what burnt hair smells like. The 30 seconds felt like a lifetime and then eye one was done. Eye # 2 she did the same thing, I still was freaking out and I of course thought about that movie Final Destination 5 the eye surgery scene where the girl dies a horrible death by eye laser. Lucky for me I lived and when the surgery was done I just remember someone walking me to my car and my wife driving me home. I remember getting in the car and getting out and then waking up the next day. When I woke up I could see perfectly it was a beautiful experience. I woke up seeing, this has not happened for over 20 years. I was so overwhelmingly happy. I went back for a couple of follow up appointments and asked more questions and that was it. It’s been a little over a year and I am so happy that I got the surgery done. I wish I had done it sooner. I have had no problems since and I still love waking up everyday being able to see without help. I would recommend everyone who is able to get LASIK. I would also recommend my Doctor.
