10 Amazing Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Roses
Some days ago when I went grocery shopping i stumbled up on a newly opened florist shop! How nice i thought i can bring home the groceries and some nice classic red roses for my wife. What i found however was a selection of flowers i never saw before. I decided to do some reasearch and here are 10 amazing facts abour roses you probably didnt know:
(1) Jack And The Rosestalk
We don't think of roses as very tall right? Well think again. Robert Bendel, a 73-year-old from Morristown bought a rose bush 15 years ago and planted it in right next to his house. It is one of the tallest free standing rose bushes recorded, standing at 18 feet and 6 inches. So even if you live on the second floor in this house you can still open the window and smell the roses!
(2) You Think The Roses You Buy Are Expensive ?
I dont mean to be a cheap ass, but I don't want to open my wallet too wide when I go shopping for flowers. However, there are some rich people that are willling to spend quire a stagering amount of money on flowers. One such flower is the Juliet rose which was breed by David Austin. This rose took 15 years and £3 million (about $5 million) to breed. It is the world’s most expensive flower, and if I ever have the money I will buy one for my wife. Actually, giving it a second thought I wouldn't, I would invest that money in steem power instead.
(3) Are You Hungry For Some Roses ?
Don Juan might have put the rose stalk in his mouth but he didn't eat it. The fact is though that the Rose hips of some species can be used for making food. It is also known to be extremely rich in vitamin C. Usually, these kind of roses are made into jam, jelly, or brewed for tea.
(4) The largest rosebush in the world
Just like with the fact of how tall roses can be you would be surprised how big a rose bush can become. The world’s largest rosebush is of the Lady Banksia variety, it is truly gigantic. The rosebush’s canopy measures 8,500 square feet (around 790 square meters) and the trunk has a circumference of around 12 feet (3.6 metres), when it blooms you can count up to 200 000 roses on this bush!
(5) Roses Again?
Are you tired of always buying the same red roses ? well luckily for you there are more than 100 species of roses so there is always something new to try.
(6) Roses can live a very long time
Roses are mentioned throughout history and rose fossils date back 35 million years but did you know that Roses also live a very long time? In the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany you can find a rose bush that has lived for more than a 1000 years
and it still blooms beautifully today!
(7) The Land Of Roses
If you really love roses I will tell you where to go ! More than half of the land surface in Equador is covered with rose fields more specificaly around 54%. Now that is a lot of roses, but there is a good reason, they are one of the main suppliers of roses for the american market and around 80 percent of the 4 billions sold roses in America originate from Equador.
- One Exception
For the over 100 species of all roses they all have 5 petals except with one rare exception the 'Rosa sericea' which has only four.
(9) I Rose You
The word rose comes from French, but the original source is from latin's rosa. When Rosa is used in endearment it means“love”.
(10) Rainbow Roses
So the other day when I went to the flower shop I saw the Rainbow Rose for the first time in my life. Truly mesmerizing and beautiful and I assumed the petals were painted with the different colors. It turns out that there is another way it is made. The stalk is seperated at the bottom and put in water with different colors. As the rose sucks up the water the colors are transferred into the leaf.
So next time you go shopping for roses maybe you will want to try something different then classic red. I would stay away from the expensive Juliet Rose and the 18 feet tall one. But other than that why not try one of the 100 other species of roses ?
How about you, what is your favorite rose and did you learn anything new from this post? Looking forward to hear your comment!

Great post, my first time seing the rainbow roses too. They're probably a big hit in China, right?
I haven't seen them before and I think it might be quite new here. I have no doubt that it's going to be really huge here in China, it's definitely something different ! I should buy them for my wife next time !
several rose bushes in garden. one is like 10ft tall. and hardy vs freezing winters as it has been around a while. also yellow rose bush and the yellow smells very sweet compared to the others.
That's a quite tall one ! Maybe in some years you can break the record :)
Another fact, no matter how careful you are when pruning them they always manage to stick at leaxt one prick into you.
Hahaha that id a good fact for sure, and an important one if you didn't prune before !
This was so interesting to read I learnt a lot from it
But like you I wouldn't buy that expensive one either Iveould invest some in Steem and some on my wife
Yean the expensive one isn't really worth it to be honest ! You made a good point invest in steem AND in the wife, I definitely forgot the most important thing there ;) hehe
I guess I have been around long enough to know to play it safe :)
Better safe than sorry and of course the cliche but very true saying: " Happy wife happy Life" hehe

I love roses but if I had a garden, it would be filled with wildflowers and inhabited by fairies. 😍
Haha than sounds like a pretty cool garden to me ! At my grandparents old place there were fields with wild flowers, almost felt like walking in a fairy tale !
Awww! My dream garden! Closing my eyes to see and just realized my wildflower garden, of course, has a few alpacas sunning themselves on a beautiful spring day.
I didn't know what alpacas are so i just googled it. I think I have seen them sometime before on to or in my dreams. Anyways they are super cute !
Lol, my friend's farm had 15 crias, or babies, so I posted some of their pictures in my profile. They are the sweetest fluffy animals ever. Adorable. I love them so much. My husband knows we're going to end up with them. 😍
Haha! Well I guess he doesn't have a choice ? You should make a post about these animals ! They are almost fantasy like !
