People eat garbage in Venezuela

in #life7 years ago

Very good to all, I would like to start by telling you that this is a topic that I will touch very much in my first post

This can be a bit delicate, I would say that even for some, but sadly it is a reality that we live in Venezuela, shortages, inflation, lack of inputs and food are the main causes of our terrible situation (not counting others political aspects of which I prefer not to comment).
Every day you can see people, whether men or women, old people and even children, searching the garbage, they are constantly looking for something to feed themselves.
It's sad to have to see this, but it's all reality.

10% of people in extreme poverty (about 1.5 million) eat what they are given, garbage or leftovers from restaurants exposing themselves to diseases

Hundreds of people, for different situations had to leave what little they had to survive or feed their families made the decisions to go out and eat the garbage.

Some 9.6 million citizens of Venezuela - almost one third of the population - eat two or fewer meals a day. Income poverty increased almost nine points between 2015 and 2016 to 81.8% of households, according to the Living Conditions Survey. 51.51% are in extreme poverty.

Without taking the countless number of people who die every day because of anemia or malnutrition and many others because of illnesses caused by eating contaminated food.

Any political solution?

In the political landscape of our country we can see certain actions to counteract the famine (which sincerely does not work):

CLAP boxes:

We can see some projects such as CLAP boxes or bags a food distribution system throughout the country, which should arrive every 15 days at homes with an "accessible" price, which unfortunately for some of these families living in extreme poverty does not reach them or simply never reaches their homes (I can personally assure you that I have only received this box 2 times and the project has been in process for more than a year), not to mention the people in charge of distributing said boxes (that if I want to clarify that they are not all only some) steal or extract certain products and sell them at high prices by other means.

Without deviating too much towards the political issue, I would like to say that for me this situation is one of the saddest I can see in my country, so I would like to tell you an anecdote of your own:

plaza-republica1.jpg

No more than 2 weeks ago I was with a group of friends in Plaza de la República (well known park here in Maracaibo), it was around 4:00 p.m., and while we were talking I watched as people began to arrive (with this not only I mean adults, if not whole families, mothers and their children, and even gentlemen). All of them, little by little, coming together to see that they were poor people and we knew they were waiting for someone to give them a hand that would give them something to eat or drink, to help them in some way, and sincerely from the bottom of my heart it hurts me to see how the society in which we live falls lower and lower every day, it hurts me to see the children go hungry, sick , it hurts me to know that my country can not give a safe and healthy future to those children who are growing at this time in that situation.

Will there be any Social Solution?

And you will surely ask this question, I would not say that it is a concrete solution or that in the long run it will improve the situation but I feel that they somehow make a difference and help these people.
There are some projects that are carried out in the city, in charge precisely in the delivery of food to the needy (that is, if nothing is charged, everything is given away), one of these projects is:

Table of Mercy:

The work of the Table of Mercy began in February last year, when a couple of husbands felt that their hearts were breaking into a thousand pieces when they saw how a man, in a street situation, "was fighting with some stray dogs for a bag of garbage to be able to feed itself, "said who today is the general coordinator of social work.
This is how the desire to help arose, which began with the delivery, to some 100 people, of some small cards that invited a lunch at the Padre Claret church, Fernández said. The hundred guests attended the meeting, accompanied by 50 other individuals.
In the following Wednesdays 200 mouths went, and thus the number was growing to add today more than 700 guests who receive their lunch weekly.

Every Monday, the menu of the week is designed and, among the contributions of volunteers, parishioners and anonymous donations, the required ingredients are arriving. The vegetables are cut on Tuesdays and the food is ready for its preparation, on Wednesdays in the first hour.
Although the end of the Table of Mercy started to respond to the need for food, little by little other ways of helping joined it. In addition to serving food, people are given basic medical care with delivery of medicines, care of cases of open wounds, ulcerations, scabies, scabies and even hairdressing services are offered, thanks to the collaboration of a well-known beauty center of the city.
Donations of clothing and supplies necessary for the care of babies and children have been received recently. The levels of need they see are worrisome. New projects arose since many of the activities in the Claret are carried out and currently the team of volunteers within the pastoral work "hard" to advance them to achieve them.
Many of the cases that are taken care of weekly belong to people of the third age, who do not count on the support of their direct relatives and, therefore, they are practically helpless. It is planned to start weekly meetings in which the elderly can talk and where special recreation activities are done for them.

Thank you very much to all..
