🌹 BEING BORN A GIRL 🌹
A show based on the text 17 Variations Sérieuses by the swiss author Emanuelle Delle Piane performed by Candice Martel.
We promised to reveal some more details about the show we have been working on in Lausanne. Two intense days in the theatre resulted in these images that we are sharing with you today. Due to the Covid Pandemic, we could not perform in front of a live audience. That's why we chose to take the chance and film the show.
This part of the show is called: Gang Bang. In this scene, the theatre will be turned into a club. The intense techno music will nebulize your mind. Just like the mind of this 18-year-old girl that is telling her story of this very moment. It's a tragic, shocking scene that gives me shivers each time I see it. I can't wait to see it in a packed theatre.
One essential element in the show is tap dance, combined with storytelling. Here Candice is changing from her elegant shoes into her tap shoes. As she changes her shoes, she is also changing her character, her mood, and perspective.
In this chapter of the performance Candice is talking about rape as a weapon of war. A horrific practice in order to break the spirit of a people. Love can hardly grow in places where this has been done. There will be no reparations or compensations paid to women who experienced this dreadful practice. It's humiliating and leads - in many cases - to suicide or unsafe practiced abortions.
You can't leave the show without feeling the urge for debate and discussion. It really haunts your thoughts. I also believe that the reception between men and women is profoundly different. That's why I would always plan a good hour of conversation in the foyer of the theatre after watching "Being Born A Girl".

In this moment of the show, Candice Martel is using the beautiful song "My favorite things" in order to mix it with a disturbing chapter of Emanuelle delle Piane's text about a rape. It is the first chapter of the story that will lead into the "Gang Bang". The sweetness and softness of the song stand in stark contrast with the harsh reality that the text is portraying.

These are a few of my favorite things
Now, during the pandemic, we must keep an eye out for our female friends. For many women home is not a safe place. The same counts for children. That's why we have to be attentive to what's happening in our neighborhood. Families are under an immense amount of stress. So let's keep our ears and eyes open for people who are in need of help. It's better to check on people a little too often than not often enough.
