'Everyone' knows best
As a mom to be it seems that 'everyone' knows best nowadays. I wonder if there were so many people interested in advising me how to live if I wouldn't be pregnant. This 'everyone' has an advice about everything. What to eat, how to sleep, how to live, how to walk, how to give birth, how to spend the first weeks with my, yet unborn, baby, how to raise this little human.
I seriously wonder if I'm the only one on this earth to get annoyed by all those unasked pieces of advice. I ain't sick, I'm just pregnant. But, I probably am solo on this huge earth who doesn't feel comfortable with all this information. Why? Because the women who give this advice are 99% mothers as well. They've been through this period before.
Thank you for reading my personal frustration, back to the analysis.
Anyhow, it makes me wonder.. isn't this something we all do? If we just leave the subject pregnancy and raising children and look at other subjects or life-related questions.
If someone tells you something, a situation, problem, dilemma or even something nice that happened in his or her life, we all tend to come up with something based on our own experience. Which will be formulated in an advice or just a story to tell.
In some literature I've read this is explained as a natural way of communicating. We are used to learn by listening to others. Listening to information is sometimes even considered as the most effective way. So in some way, we taught ourselves that telling a story or giving advice based on our experience would be interesting for the other person. We do it almost all the time. Even if we notice ourself it isn't always as pleasant as we think..
Do you recognize it yourself? Ever thought I'm not interested in this information, but giving unasked advice yourself as well?
Just think about it, just once...
The worst thing that may happen? You might improve your own style of communicating...
