Traveling with AIDAprima - arrival

I decided to go with my 2nd son (3.5 years) old on a cruise. Just him and me. First of all my oldest son still has pre-school and he is so much enjoying "fasnacht/karneval" so that I didn't want to take that away from him. Today is the big parade with all his friends.

And than it is also not easy to be the second oldest. He always wants to be like his older brother and is competing with him in all possible ways at the moment with just one disadvantages: being 2.5 years younger. So that can be quite frustrating some times. So I wanted to give him some "dad" time and get him out of the regular routine into a new environment.

Some people find that odd going on vacation without wife and probably everybody on this trip thinks that I am divorced. I love my wife very much and one thing is certain - it is the last reason that I wouldn't want her to be here with us. But In my point of view there is nothing so powerful than time for two. With your partner but also with your kid especially if he/her has a lot of brothers or sisters. That time can change and heal a lot and has for sure a significant influence on the relations between those two individuals spending the time together. And in my feeling that was something my son just needed right now.

As all of this was very spontaneous the only chance was to go on a cruise around the canarian islands. I did that trip before and have been on several cruises before but actually I didn't care about the where and how to go on vacation as only the time with my son mattered to me. And with him you can have fun everywhere.

The flight from Zurich was quite early - 6 a.m. so we had to get up at 3:30 to get things ready and drive to the airport on time. The flight was perfectly alright - of course my son was so thrilled going on holiday that he didn't sleep until 30 min before landing. Timing could have been better but at least he got some sleep.

Arriving at the ship was amazing - those things are really huge. My son first thought that is a building and was looking for the ship. And he is right - it is not so easy to distinguish especially as those ships usually leave the harbor late in the night (when he is already sleeping) and arriving at the next harbor very early in the morning (before anybody is awake). That can also confuse some adults not to imagine how difficult it is for a 3.5 year old to get the right picture.

We arrived at 11 a.m. at the check-in and were told that the official check-in time is 2 p.m. That is something you don't want to hear being on the road with a small kid sind 4 a.m. in the morning. But that was the first surprise I got: 10 minutes later they just opened check-in for early arrivals so I felt really taken care of.

Being on board I already assumed that my room won't be ready and that was fine for me. I check with reception (they started to introduce robots to make waiting in line a fun thing) and indeed the room was not ready yet. No problem - lets go for lunch and than walk around the ship. While grabbing some food I received a text saying: your room is ready. That was around 12:30. I was simply amazed as I even has asked for a notification.

The only bitter pill to swallow is the security training everybody needs to attend to. Yes - everybody even 3.5 year old kids who got up at 4 a.m. in the morning need to come to the training at 9 p.m. (+1 hour time shift). So that was difficult but probably not easy to plan differently.

So my impression of the first days was fantastic. The organization (on-boarding wise) was just excellent and better than a few years ago. That is something which makes me feel taken cared of - something I want in my vacation.

Thank you @lichtblick. Will try to write some more when he is sleeping.

The mask is super cute.
I understand your point of travelling with kids but without wife. People say once you have kids, vacation becomes different, as you need to spend a lot of time taking care of the kids on vacation.

Enjoy the trip with lovely kids.

Thanks - the mask they build themselves. It took weeks but I find they really did a great job.

Yes - traveling with kids is different. I love kids - I really do - so for me it is an enrichment but I know a lot of people who want kids but keep their life's as they had before having kids - than in my opinion things become easily a problem as the kid becomes an "intruder".

Love to read your blogs - just followed.

Thanks famunger, much appreciated.

Fun thing with the kids is that you can always get impressed by their creativity. You are right, many aren't ready to adjust their lifestyle to a more kid-friendly way. Yet the switch can be difficult for many youngsters nowadays.

Looking forward to see more posts of your quality time trip.

Cruising is nice and Aida is very nice. We really enjoyed last year and might go again.

Aida is also great for little children. And not only because they are free of charge.

Emergency training is really terrible. We had like all baby orchestra crying for 10 minutes.

I should actually go each year two weeks. Then it would probably take 5 years to learn German.

Is the prima their biggest vessel?

Have fun! 😎

Thanks for sharing - I assume you are not german native speaker than. What made you select AIDA despite it is german centric?

Yea the Prima is the newest one - not sure if biggest one but probably yes. The training is a pain for everybody I guess - that there is no other solution ...

Ja das ist richtig. Ich bin hollandisch.

My wife speaks a bit better German than I do. And I thought all cruises would have English as core language. For me or actually was, cause when I asked something in German I got answered in English 😀

We went with Aida because they were the only one with a cruise at the date we needed it. After booking we learned that Aida is probably the only company where children are free of charge. Even until they are 16 if I remember well.

Oh man...I can't believe 3.5 year old has to go to security training! That makes no sense to me. So sweet of you to take time for just the two of you. I've traveled to so many places but still haven't been on a cruise yet!

Thank you for the kind words!
You should go some time - cruise is really fun and a great way to explore different locations in a short time with no stress at all!

Wow, this must be awesome! It is also the right age that he will remember stuff, might even be one of his most vivid memories if you ask him in 20 years!

That 1-on-1 time between a parent and the son/daughter is extremely important. It is so much different.

Last year I took my mom to Florence for a weekend in May and my dad to Lisbon in October. It was amazing. They are together and happily maried but only by being with just one of them, I broke a bit of the parent-child relationship and got a different bond (friends/people bond ish) for a few days.

I would recommend everybody to make sure to have some one-on-one time with one of their parents or one of their children. You are setting a great example @famunger!

Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experience which I find a very good idea. Anyway life is short - take the time and get to know your parents (a part of yourself)!

great info.i like travelling.
please carry on....

Wow, I wish I had such opportunity,to hang out with my dad like this, though he's no more... Nice one @famunger. Kids sure love experiences like dis.

My son first thought that is a building and was looking for the ship.

Hahahahha, he's right. The ship looks more like a building than what it is.
I wish u guys safe trip back and have fun while there

I hope also he will appreciate the time - dead always remembers us how precious time is.

Thanks for the wishes.
