Circumcision in Public

Have you ever imagined circumcision in broad daylight when hundreds are watching you? Well welcome to the bagisu in Africa who do exactly that.
The bagisu are in Uganda and to them being circumcised in hospital doesn't count and makes you a lesser man. This is exactly how a man counts to be circumcised in the bagisu culture.
Circumcision is a season there and it's done in even years. None circumcised males are selected from ages 7-20s. They spend three days preparing for the circumcision. In those three days they dance around the village on local sounds called the kadodi. Drums are played and a huge crowd follows and dances with them. They move around collecting gifts to encourage them not to back out from the ceremony. Those gifts include Money and goats given by relatives and well wishers. By the way the boys are usually in only shorts and plastered with ash and wearing beads. That differiciates them from the rest of the crowd

When day three comes they do the final dance that ends up at the ground where they will be circumcised. Remember a crowd follows and the time has come. The boy am using boy because unless one is circumcised they are not men in the bagisu culture. So the boy removed his shorts anf stands straight holding a stick from behind the neck . An elder who does the circumcision comes with a very sharp knife and removes the foreskin in three cutting steps. The boy being cut must be straight and must not cry or make any sound because if they do it's a sign of cowadise and will be mocked about it there entire life.
So after being circumcised now they are men and Infact can marry a woman. They wear skirts until they properly heal. Circumcision is a must for all the males in the bagisu culture and must be done in that exact procedure. It's a culture they are proud of and attracts so many tourists.
