Elderly but not forgotten

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Today, the students from my workshop and I went to a retirement home in the center of the city to spend the afternoon with the elderly living there.

We sang songs from all ages, some of them which we have never heard before but they were so excited about listening to us that we learned the songs right there with them.

The idea was to share a sweet moment with the elderly and learn new experiences from them. This activity is done every Tuesday; the high-school principal chooses a workshop, and the classes are taught there, to the students and to the retirees. This week it was my turn.

As the day came to an end, we were unexpectedly greeted with cookies, Coke, and homemade popcorn to set the guitars aside and just chat with them about their lives and stories.

It was an experience more than rewarding, and we can't wait to come back there soon. I invite all of you to take this example and just do the same as me if you get the chance. You will not only get to hear a ton of interesting stories, but you will also meet incredible people, it will be worth every second of it.

There aren't any pictures of us singing because, well, I had the guitar in my hands, but there's a few of the little snack party we had afterwards.

Great idea, the elders should be treated same way as any other person, they have also trailed and lived the life we are living now and so neglecting them would be very bad.

Thank you for brightening the lives of our seniors. They have so much to teach us ... so much wisdom to learn for those who want to listen. I know you made them feel more connected to the world by your being there. All the best!

These kind of acts are getting more popular worldwide. It's a known and popular thing in countries like Turkey. Here if a mother works outside of the house (before not many did but woman employement is on a big rise), she can let her parents or in-laws to take care of the baby until she is back home.

Moreover, it's getting institutionalised in countries like Japan. Here's a story about this: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2013/09/05/national/babies-comfort-the-elderly-and-moms-benefit-as-well/#.Wd8qlhO0OT8

I can say it's trending throughout the whole world because of increasing women employment. I hope this is beneficiary for anyone interested in the subject. Have a nice day :)
