Why
WHY
Making sense out of disorder
Hoping for calm out of calamity
Wondering about life's meaning
The purpose of humanity
Why is a place to start
In order to temper fears
And quench the worrying heart
Why does a mother and wife
Sit idly by
To absorb each wicked blow
Disfigured and bloodied
She apologizes
For his contempt of his own life's choices
As if it were her repercussions to bear
Blow after blow
Her child pleads and begs
Strike after strike
She shields her precious child
Selflessly behind her battered legs
Why does a father and husband
Sleep on the streets
Away from comfort and warmth
On a cold winter's eve
Accepting his fate
Life turned upside down
Living in turmoil
In the disease riddled
Crime infested
Alley ways of town
Kicked out of his own home
No longer respected and loved
She had moved on
The house and young children in tow
A tragedy that he could not simply accept
No support
No helpline for men
A forgotten man he became instead
To his beloved children
Their minds filled with lies of their father
He was as good as dead
Why is a powerful yet small question
The first step in compassion
On the path to a better place
From visible leaves it can lead us down to the root
Where true understanding can be found
So often are we quickly jump at solutions
Waiting for problems
Life is never that easy
We must dig in the dirt for meaningful answers
Driving through false perceptions
Powered by one simple question
Why?

Thank you for sharing @freeinthought. Such a touching poem. Without questioning Why we are not curious or aware to the purpose of the action that caused the Why in the first place. Why is a question of self and others without Why there would be no change. Brilliant poem.
Thank you for the super eloquent response.
Emotions are wonderful but if humanity could only set aside emotions in order to have meaningful exploratory conversations about life's issues from a rational perspective, we could move mountains and build bridges of understanding across the chasms of our differences.
Well said and so very true.
