Effect of begging for Upvotes and Follows

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I noticed this trend even before making my first post here. Begging for upvotes (likes) and follow is not peculiar to Steemit, as I have seen this on facebook, twitter, Instagram and other social media. I can never understand begging on these platforms as more likes and followers add nothing of value to my life but only help in growing the empires of the owners (except of course if I am using the account for marketing).

Begging for upvotes or follows on Steemit is a bit understandable as you are begging for monetary values but still annoying. Steemit is meant to be a platform that rewards you for adding value in form of writing a good content, taking a cool photograph or making a nice video. I know it can be 'hit your head against the wall' frustrating to put efforts into creating contents that nobody is upvoting or no much followers to upvote or resteem it. I have had my fair share of that and I still do but that does not make begging is right.

I am not totally devoid of blame.I also begged for upvotes in my first few days here as I thought it was a norm since a lot of people are doing it. A lot of folks still don't see nothing wrong in begging because this what they met joining Steemit. This act can hurt the community and the way it is perceived. Again Steemit is meant to be a reward system for the values and how your contents resonate with people and not how much you beg for upvotes or worship the whales.
Before begging for upvotes and follows hurt the community, it hurts you first - it hurts your identity and your rewards especially if you are in this for the long haul.

Here are the few ways begging for upvotes and follows can affect you.

  • It crashes your reputation and I am not talking of the number in front of your name but how you are perceived. What comes to mind immediately your username appears... Oh that upvotes beggar!

  • It reduces the value of your posts. You can put a lot of efforts into making a post and people will perceive it as shitty just because you are begging.

  • The chance that people get you to removed after following is high. Like most people I want my feed to contain posts that resonate with me. If your posts don't interest Me, I will likely remove you later though you begged me into following you.

  • I noticed people only get the chance to beg planktons and minnows that will upvotes their posts of few cents..birds of a feather, right? Begging whales will probably get you flagged, they most times upvote or follow you out of their convictions or liking your works.
In a nutshell, you get a lot to lose but few cents to gain from begging for upvotes and follows.

It is important to add that there are a lot of groups with #postpromotion on discord, telegram, whatsapp and others that you can drop your links. Post your links in as many as you can but please don't beg.

Thank you for reading.

Don't forget to upvote to encourage the writer, resteem for others to benefit and comment to share your thoughts.

Very good observation, bro. Nothing beats a good impression and a character to add with it. Begging will only result to more begging. There is nothing wrong in promoting posts by telling people what they stand to gain or benefit from it. But not begging for just upvote.

Create an identity, a good one ofcourse and the rest will take care of itself. And yea..Post promotion is a way to more exposures. Thank you for stopping by bro.

Yes I accept. Thank you

You know, I actually engaged a guy who was using copy/paste spam on my posts to beg for upvotes. He was new and admitted he didn't know how the system work, but he appeared to want to. I sent him off in a different direction, and I see that he's making some of his own posts now, so I followed him. :)

I just wanted to share that because it is possible to reform some spammers. Who knew?

It is possible and that is the one of the purposes of this post. Thank you for affecting someone positively and for your contribution.

I don't agree less. Upvoted, following and resteemed.

Thank you for everything.

Begging for votes suck! Upvoted, following and resteemed too!

That's the way i see it too. I appreciate your been here.

I think this needs to be said here often. Like someone said steemit is not a day job. If you are consistent enough you will get there rather than have you reputation soiled. Nice article

Nice to see a lot of people share the same view. Thank you.

Who has begging really helped on this platform. Its more like a call to get flagged. Craft a good post and people will be ready to upvote.

Hehe...Nobody. You are so on point. Thank you.

I agree totally with you. I haven't asked, or begged, for upvotes for any of my articles and I never will. If I get no upvotes I just have to swallow my pride and carry on producing articles that will hopefully add some value to the Steem community. It's all about quality and relevance, and that's what I base my upvotes. Cheers for a great article.

You have the right mindset already better that when I started. Then I would put a link in postpromotion and ask or beg people in the room to upvote. Though I never did one on one begging but any form begging should be discouraged. Thank you for reading.

add value and the rewards eventually are going to come to you.

Gbam! When you see or hear that, it means you said it all.

Thank you for your short but meaningful contribution. I appreciate it.

Brilliant post. I fell in to traps of thinking that you had to follow all your followers. Your feed turns to pap. If someone replies to a post with a good thought out comment, I'll check them out. I'll follow if their posts are quality. That's the only reason.

You definitely can't follow all your followers, just those that blog posts interest you.

Quality comments help a lot. Like you said it makes people take note of you and check out your blog to see if you are worth following.

Thank you @mr-neil. I appreciate your contribution.
