3 Basic Fundamentals of Engineering

In this post I will explain 5 of the basic principals of engineering, these principals are used daily throughout the world in all aspects of life.

1. What goes up, must come down.

Gravity is a massive part of life, whether its keeping your feet on the ground or keeping an atmosphere around the planet, without gravity, there would be no life.

Gravity is a force, represented on earth as a constant of 9.81 m/s², the larger the object the stroger the force is. for example on the moon the gravitational force is only 1.62 m/s² this is due to the size difference between earth and the moon.

This could be a potential issue in the future if we began to colonise planets. jupiter has a gravitational strength of around 24 m/s² therefore you would feel 2.5x heavier on jupiter as you do on earth, this means that your heart would have to work 2.5x harder to curculate the blood around your body. this is one of the mainm issues with space travel and colonisation of larger planets.

2. Energy can only be transfered, not created or destroyed.

I decided to use image for the thumbnail of this post for the reason that it describes this principal very well.

as the car is driving it is converting chemical energy in the form of petrol (Gasoline) to kenetic energy through the engine and too the wheels, there is also a loss of energy due to friction where the tires meet the road causing tires to heat up. when the car hits the wall there is a very large amount of potential energy put into the wall which is then put back into the car, this is the reason for crumple zones as they are used to obsorb the energy so your body doesn't have too. all of these energy transfers have been exactly that transfers no energy has been created only trasformed from one type to another.

3. Everything fails (eventually)

Eventually everything will fail, engineers nowadays understand this and design things accordingly. as with the image of the car and its crumple zone that is an engineer planning for failure. that car has been designed to fail in the safest way possible by obsorbing evergy in an impact and protecting the driver. this is also preformed in contruction industries especially in developing countries such as Bangladesh where biuldings are known to flood during the rainy season so they are designed to fail safely when they do and try to preseve as much life as possible.
