Perspective

Hello everyone! I have been spending some time evaluating the direction of my writing efforts. I want these entries to remain an open diary for anyone looking to find value. I also want to repackage my efforts a little bit by zooming out – to provide a broader perspective. My choice to “zoom-out” is twofold:

First, getting specific can kill the narrative. As contrary as that may sound, by connecting my own dots I shortchange the reader of opportunities to arrive at their own conclusions – to draw their own lines. My intentions as a writer are to inspire thought and conversation. Those who read my words should never feel like they have nothing else to add when they finish. I want to offer some context with my blog entries.

Second, I want to write a book. I believe getting down to the nitty-gritty would be better received in a more expansive narrative. I have a lot I want to talk about, but I want to ensure I am using the appropriate medium to convey my experiences. I want to offer rich content within a book of my trials.

The picture above was from an evening I was sitting in my truck down by the river (as I often do). It’s a peaceful place to think and gain perspective. I took the picture because I saw the irony in that rearview mirror. The clouds, the sun, the bridge, the silhouettes, and all the colors were brilliantly contained within the plastic frame. Sometimes you can’t see the brilliance of how things fall together until you look around you.

This picture is from my latest walk in the park (another great thinking spot). It was the first time in almost 5 months that I went for a sunny walk. I’m a lot like Superman in that I get my power from the sun. Drury days equal a drury Joe. I was stepping off the roadway onto the walking path when I looked ahead. I saw the same expanse of blues and greens you see now (slightly… this has a sweet filter). I decided the capture the cool-color contrast because, at that moment, I felt right at home among the clear sky, warm sun, and all the vibrant life. Sometimes looking forward and feeling at home means you’re going in the right direction.

I get away from people (many times beyond cell signal) to get a healthy dose of perspective. It allows me to think for myself and to not believe everything I think. Let me know what you do to maintain perspective!
