I´m not 100% sure, but I think smoking them had some benefitials for people with asthma and somehow was helpful for a better breathing.
I am taking a wild guess here that they probably had active components that relaxed the bronchial tubes.
I´ve read a bit about those cigarettes and you are totally right :)
