Waste free transition. Why so much plastic!

in #life5 years ago

What do you think the trend will be in 2020? Last year, becoming plant-based and vegan was all the hype. I even fell into it and out of it. Since then, I've become more mindful. It wasn't just a diet change most were intrigued with, it made individuals aware of the impact of their choices.

A movement of awareness or a kick in the rear to be more mindful. This lead to other movements getting attention, such as minimalism and other waste-free practices. It seems the idea of becoming more mindful extended beyond one's health.

How much waste are you responsible for?

There are studies on how much garage a household will produce over the course of pretty much any timeline; can you guess what your number is? This number has evolved from overall waste to specifically targeting plastic. Everything we use comes in plastic, incorporates plastic, and as you can see creates more waste.

Beyond plastic, as we can see with the ban of plastic straws there is also a focus on sustainable living. Many have started taking a stand against adding to their carbon footprint, limiting or stopping altogether with the support of the harvesting of certain oils, and adding to the waste in the world.

Individuals have started being more mindful of what they buy. Have you?

Learning to identify a real need and a want...

Everyone has their routine for every aspect of their life. These routines are often times intentional or maybe for you it isn't. Maybe these routines are mindless, or habitual. Either way, there is an impact on how we live our lives. Financially speaking, and our health, are affected by our choices. Making one change a day or one small adjustment will lead to a lifestyle, not just a temporary change.

I am always looking for ways to save money and ways to have less stuff. I didn't realize there was an entire movement behind this desire. Part of me feels late to the game. That same part feels very grateful for those that have already figured it out and laid a way for me to follow.

To have so many that already figured it out is a privilege. Those that have pioneered the way and left behind youtube videos, blogs, and reviews have a special place in my heart.

Making the change.

Being aware of how one creates waste is always a helpful start. Take note on how you get ready in the morning, what products do you use? When making meals take note of what items your purchasing? Take not on what you're using to carry those items out of the store?

And then slowly make one change at a time. Then give yourself some grace as you figure it all out.

The change started slow because it can get expensive quickly.

I use a bag to carry my groceries and will eventually buy the bags to carry the fruit and veggies too. I've started experimenting with shampoo and conditioner bars versus bottled products. I use glass containers for my lunch and meals. Now I am looking at waste-free dental floss and lotions.

I love my new safety razor and am glad I switched. It did take me a while to make the purchase. It is very easy to over research an item. Sometimes you just have to purchase one and see what happens. So, what's next?

The game plan is to purchase a couple of items a month as I run out of them. There are a ton of options online to help you get started included subscription boxes as an option. I haven't used any, but I am more cautious about packaging as I am transitioning to waste-free items. I wish there were more waste-free stores near me, but we aren't there yet.

Do you recommend any companies/products?
