RV Life :: The Universe Has a Sense of Humor!

Today started out just like any other day in @thedodgemahal. Wake up, take a wee in the trees, make coffee, and make our plans for the day. Somewhere in between coffee and making plans for the day, @richardcrill jumped up from the bed in search of his laptop as he was just struck with an awesome idea for his next Steemit post. Water is boiling, it’s time to make coffee. Ah, what a beautiful day...“Wait, what do you mean you can’t find your laptop?”

Bam. That gut-wrenching feeling flooded in when we finally realized where it was. We had made a munchie run the night before to Burger King (don’t judge, it’s the only place to grab french fries and ice cream that late at night) and we knew we must have left it in the booth. I called Burger King and their manager didn’t find anything in their lost and found. Sheer panic ensued as we faced the potential of losing absolutely everything crypto-related on that laptop. And to make matters worse, we had literally just had a whole conversation a few days before about how we really need to back-up our laptop to another drive. Not only did his backpack contain all of our important documents & our last few years worth of work, it also had our charge cord to our solar battery that we use to charge everything at the moment. We were royally screwed.

Doing what anyone in denial would do, we jumped in the car to drive to Burger King to take a look for ourselves - it could still be under the booth at this point, who knows?! We couldn’t believe we would just leave a huge backpack with our entire last few years worth of work behind at freaking Burger King.

We went inside BK and made sure the manager had both our phone numbers just in case - they were waiting on the night manager to get back with them on whether or not they found a bag the night before. Feeling pretty helpless at this point, we start driving around town to see if we could see anyone wearing the backpack. You run into the same people in this little mountain town so we figured there was at least a small chance we’d see someone.

The Man Hunt Begins

We started racking our memory of who we remember being at BK the same time we were that could have taken the bag. We immediately thought of one guy in particular - a young man with dreads who was having a rather loud conversation on the phone with someone about how broke he was.

He seemed like the most obvious suspect in this case, so we start looking around all the places where the people with dreads hang out - the city park, the grocery store parking lot, coffee shops. We left no stone unturned.

Case SOLVED!

After our unsuccessful dreaded-man hunt, we went back to BK as our last ditch effort before we threw in the towel. Our phones had died and we just wanted to make sure they hadn’t tried to call us. Turns out they had JUST tried calling us because they found the back pack!!! The night manager put it on the back of the door in their office instead of the lost & found. We were beyond grateful to be reunited with our laptop, but I immediately felt guilty for blaming the guy with dreads. Who knows, he could have been the one to turn it in.

Still waiting for the funny part? It’s coming.

(We found our NOT-guilty suspect after all)

We needed to charge all of our electronics in a bad way, so we headed to the coffee shop to charge up. As I’m sitting here thinking about what post I want to write next, I look up and see, who else, but the guy with dreads that we were on a man hunt for ALL DAY! The universe really has the best jokes.

So, what have I learned from this roller coaster of a day (and all before lunch?!)

1.) Always have your shit backed up
2.) We’re pretty good at creating our reality with our thoughts - good and bad.
3.) Laugh because the Universe is pretty damn funny

Hope this post helps anyone out there having a not so fun Monday - it can turn around in an instant. Just wait for the punchline.

So glad you got the laptop back!!! What a scary day.
Backup drives are great but I also like using an online backup service, incase of theft or fire that could make external drives disappear too. I have a TON of data so I use crashplan.com but there are others out there that are less pricey. Cheers to getting the laptop back!

Thanks!! And that's good advice - We'll definitely look into that option as well!

lols blame the obvious guy😂🤣
What a relief though for getting it back. Oh the universe is really damn funny. Cheers!
