We must recognize that we twist in numerous situations from day to day. When we turn the trunk spontaneously to look at someone, a twisting occurs, mainly cervical and of the upper part of the thorax; or lying on the bed to stretch, we turn our legs to one side and the trunk to another looking to activate and start moving after many hours of rest.
And what does torsion give us in yoga? Above all, it gives us awareness of the posture and awareness of its effects at a physical, energetic and emotional level.
The torsions are born in the pelvis and ascend through the spine, being more accentuated in the dorsal and cervical area. They stretch the musculature that holds the vertebrae, fibers that organize the position of the discs, which are related to balance, and are exposed to weaken by the adaptation of the skeleton to the flat surfaces of the cities, the bad positions that we adopt frequently, the lack of exercise and the passage of years.
Its most notable benefits are:

  • Twist compresses the abdomen and pelvic organs stimulating blood flow.

  • They make the spine flexible and rejuvenate, favoring the blood supply in the nervous system.

  • The flexibility of the diaphragm increases improving breathing capacity.
  • Help to relax the hips and relax the groin.

  • They are postures that increase energy levels and at the same time generate mental calmness.
