3 Tips To Have A Healthy Break-Up With Procrastination
Procrastination is a backbreaking battle to fight with. Sometimes you will win. But mostly, you’ll definitely lose.
As a typical human being, you always love to indulge with the temptation of not being able to do something that you’re supposed to do. Even now, you need to do some work, but instead, here you are reading my post.
Fighting procrastination is a constant battle. It never stops. As long as you’re alive, it will be part of your daily routine. In order to control the urge of procrastinating, you need to first understand what it really is.
Explaining Procrastination
There are plenty of studies that’s been conducted by different researchers around the globe about procrastination throughout the years.
In a research paper by Dr. Wendelien van Eerde, she cited a research performed by the lads below about procrastination and it states that
Procrastination has typically been defined as a trait or behavioral disposition to postpone or delay performing a task or making decisions. - Milgram, Mey-Tal, & Levison, 1998
Based on the same study, procrastination can result in having a detrimental effect on the psychology of a person. Procrastinating can lead to having a feeling of guilt when a certain task has been put off, being an unreliable person due to the lack of willingness to finish a work, and there is a decline of performance.
But how can you overcome procrastination? Is there really a way?
Beat Procrastination With These 3 Easy to Read But Not Easy To Do Steps
1. Self-discipline
Big word. One of the most laborious things to do while being alive. But if you want to conquer procrastination, you need to gather all your will to control it.
Let’s admit it, disciplining your own self may feel like you want to tolerate procrastination. Because it’s undemanding and all you need is give in. Whilst disciplining yourself takes a lot of effort and agonizing moments.
But having a self-discipline can benefit you in the long run. It may be a strenuous thing to do at first, but once you get the hang of it, it will be manageable and fruitful.
2. Creating A Habit
The second one is creating a routine. This is the step where you need to use your genius mind because you need to make a plan to destroy the influence of procrastination.
A productive day always starts with creating a noteworthy plan. Here’s the technique to create a pleasing habit.
• List the things that you need to do for the next day. Simplify it to have a worry-free night. Having an adequate amount of sleep can make you focus and feel fresh the next day.
• Before you sleep, read it again to condition your brain that these are the things you need to do from the moment you wake up. Your subconscious mind is powerful. Don’t underestimate what it can do.
• If you continue to do it every day, it will unquestionably become your habit. Now, that’s a good thing.
• Follow the list you’ve written. If a day will come that it looks so tiresome to you, then read the last step.
3. Cut It Down And Do It One By One
When things get tough, just breathe.
This is the thing I’ve told myself every time I feel so occupied with the different type of things I need to do for the day.
If you’re overtaken by the number of things you’ll going to do, then cut it into pieces. Do it one by one starting from the easiest task.
Once every tiny task on your list is done, I’m pretty sure you’ll have the guts to start the bigger ones.
The Ultimate Bonus Tip:
This may sound ultimately ridiculous too but it simply works for me.
If you’ll realize you’re procrastinating, simply count 1,2,3 then slam your hand on a table or whatever and shout Enough!
Then stand up without even letting yourself to have a chance to think. This will somehow help you remind yourself that you still have important things to do. And checking social media apps, playing games, or simply staring at a wall is not yet your priority.
In Conclusion:
Procrastination is slowly destroying your day and the quality of your work. If you let yourself go with it, then you’ll never go any further. You will continue wasting every precious time and chances you should be using to improve your current situation.
It is important to take control of your life and take back what is right for you. Do the work. The rest will fall into place.
