2018 Outdoor Cannabis Grow
Week: 9 and 1/2 of Flowering
Strain: Super Silver Haze

Week 9 and 1/2 and we are cutting down the second plant. Unfortunately it is also immature, but the harvest was required to prevent the spread of bud rot. And the weather in New England was supposed to be cold and wet for the majority of the next 10 days.

Looking at the plants using a jeweler's loupe we saw that the plant had a pretty decent presence of amber trichomes. Not enough to really warrant harvesting at this time, but a higher concentration than the first harvested plant.

Some of the buds still had a lot of white pistils on them. As you can see in the photo below.

Some thoughts after growing Super Silver Haze outdoors in New England

1. Train and top the plants

We didn't do this and they grew to be between 10-13 feet in some places. That was fun but it made them hard to manage. Had we topped and trained them over the course of the summer. The heights would have been managed better, and we could have better addressed other issues as they developed.

2. Provide support for the plants as the buds developed

Here in New England as the season changes from summer to fall the area gets a lot of wind and heavy rain. Both of which did a number of the tall top heavy sativa plants. By not providing them with proper supports, most of the plants had branches and stems that snapped and died.

3. Manipulate the light cycle

We allowed the plants to enter the flowering cycle naturally. This was by far our biggest mistake of the outdoor season. Had we forced the plants into flowering one month earlier, they would likely have reached their full potential in the flowering cycle.

4. Pesticides during the vegetative cycle

We didn't use any pest control methods this season. As a result the plants were attacked by caterpillars. These were in the buds as they were harvested and dried. Doing some general research on this subject, we could have found a number of safe options that would have helped the end product.

Very well done sir :-D

I love the Super Silver Haze- it was honestly one of the frostiest plants I have ever grown.

When we grew this strain indoors they were super frosty for sure. These outdoor plants were cut early. So the buds and trichomes weren't fully developed.

Definitely was a fun strain to grow and enjoy!

how is the flavor, what distinguishes it from other hazes?

That's a hard question. Super Silver Haze is a three way cross between Haze x Northern Lights x Skunk No. 1. The cured buds, smelled for us like pine, earth and chemical. It was a big difference from the Northern Lights we grew in the same season which was almost berry or fruity.

Given that line up of unique flavor profiles and the fact that we have only done edibles.

I will say it peps us right up when we eat it, with a quick onset and long duration, even on a small doses.

Our friends who have smoked it say it's smooth and potent with a quick onset and typical sativa racey effect.

Sorry, I don't think that answers your question exactly.

Lol I am just happy to know real non bot people on steem, thanks for getting back

Yeah I'm real. Not a Bot! :D

Though I can relate. I get varied responses for my well intentioned posts. And I'm only just learning that the activity could be all AI driven.

Looks gorgeous, I am smoking on some Super Lemon Haze and I believe my genetics guy has access to the Silver Haze, I have to try this cross breed.

There are a couple haze strains that make my short list. This is for potency, yield and flavor (in no particular order):

  • Super Silver Haze (SSH)
  • Ghost Train Haze
  • Super Lemon Haze
  • Super Sour Diesel Silver Haze
  • Strawberry Amnesia Haze

SSH is a great line to cross with. It is both potent and a good yielder. So it should have the ability to bulk up another strain that might be lacking in those areas.

We haven't gotten into breeding, only because we went overboard on seed purchases in 2018 and have also been pretty good with cloning from plants right before flipping to flowering.

What would you consider crossing the SSH with?

Thanks for commenting!
@massmedicinals

To be honest from what I remember the one or 2 times I smoked anything with the word Silver in, I wouldnt mind crossing that with Northern lights as you mentioned above or potentially Hempstar. I have heard Super Critical Haze is also bomb, so maybe Super critical Silver Haze would be dank af. I wish I had time to grow myself.

Unless you are traveling a lot. I would argue that you do have time to grow. Just perhaps not the largest of gardens.

Super Critical Silver Haze would be a fun blend. If you look at the lineage the strains are somewhat similar already.

Super critical haze (Haze x Critical Mass) x Super Silver Haze (Northern Lights x Skunk No.1 x Haze)

And Critical Mass (Afghani x Skunk No.1)

So the blending of SCH x SSH should retain a lot of skunk No.1 x Haze phenotypes. The variable would be the NL & Afghani which are both dominant indica.

I think this would be a great haze cross where the result would be a high THC & high yielding plant.

thoughts?

A little caterpillar in your mix never hurt no one :D nice man

Thanks @bigdizzle91,

One is no big deal. A lot of them is another story. 😁
