How to Make Homemade Cannabis Chocolate Edibles

This is a quick and easy recipe for making delicious cannabis chocolate bars. The recipe includes only 5 ingredients, and also is completed in just 5 simple steps. And really takes between 1-2 hours start to finish.

What Ingredients you will need:
1/4 cup cannabis coconut oil (~50 grams)
1/4 cup cacao powder
1 and 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 and 1/2 tablespoons honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

optional ingredients:
nuts
fruits & berries (dried or fresh)
peanut butter
pieces of chocolate

What Supplies you will need:
measuring cups and spoons (cup, 1/4 cup, 1/2 teaspoon, 1/2 tablespoon)
fork or spoon
spatula
digital scale
pyrex bowl
frying pan or flat bottomed pan
oven mitten
24 oz (710mL) tupperware

optional items:
parchment paper
whisk

Total time: ~ 45 - 120 minutes
depends on how long the chocolate bar is allowed to cool during step 5

So, lets start making some homemade cannabis chocolate bars

Step 1: Measuring

Start by measuring and adding each of the ingredients (cacao powder, cannabis coconut oil, maple syrup, honey, vanilla extract) into the pyrex bowl.

We recommend using a scale for measuring out the cannabis coconut oil. It is a great tool for determining approximate strength of your edibles.

See determining strength & potency below for more information.

Step 2: Heating & Mixing

Once all of the ingredients are in the pyrex bowl. Heat a frying pan on medium heat and add water into the pan. Place the pyrex bowl into the frying pan. You want a decent amount of water to be in the frying pan at all times. However not enough so that it will overflow once the water comes to a full boil. Depending on the heat setting, you may need to reapply water to the pan during this step.

Remember to only use glassware that is heat tempered such as pyrex glass. If you are not sure, use a smaller sauce pan instead of the glass bowl. As long as water can boil between them it will work fine.

Using a spoon or fork or whisk, begin to mix the ingredients. The cannabis coconut oil and other liquids will begin to turn the cacao powder into a gel. Continue to stir vigorously throughout this process.

Should the mixture be overly soupy or oily, add more cacao powder in small amounts.
Should the mixture be too crumbly and dry add more regular coconut oil (non-cannabis).

Most importantly, be aware of the temperature, as you do not want to burn the chocolate. You are simply trying to melt all of the ingredients evenly.

Step 3: Pouring the Cannabis Chocolate

Once all of the ingredients have dissolved, you are ready to pour the cannabis chocolate into your tupperware container. Turn off the stove and using the oven mittens and a spatula, carefully pour into the tupperware. The spatula will help you retrieve all that was in the pyrex bowl and also level out the bar.

Be careful here as the bowl will still be quite hot to the touch.

Avoid spilling the chocolate on the upper part of the tupperware as it will not be part of the finished molding at the bottom.

Step 4: Freezing the Cannabis Chocolate Bar

Depending on how cold your fridge / freezer is, this step can take around 30-60 minutes. If you are not in a rush to make use of your homemade cannabis chocolate edible it can stay in the freezer for months.

Step 5: Scoring the Cannabis Chocolate Bar for Proper Dosing

This is actually one of the most crucial steps in this process, aside from standard safety while cooking. Once the bar has had time to harden you need to score the bar into even parts.

This is really important so that you and everyone who enjoys this bar knows approximately how much they are ingesting. For reference I tend to break it down into 20 or 25 equal pieces.

It is always possible to eat more should you realize the dosing is too weak for your needs. Please be careful and do not overdose yourself or others.

Determining Strength and Potency of your Cannabis Chocolate Edible

Say you use 1 oz of cannabis flower to make a pound of coconut butter. That means you should be 1oz of cannabis distributed throughout that 1 lb of canna coco oil.

This recipe uses 50g of canna coco oil. Which is approximately 1/10th of that 1 lb of oil. So you can assume the entire cannabis chocolate bar will then contain approximately 1/10th of an ounce of cannabis or roughly 2.8 grams

And by breaking the bar into equal parts, let's say 4 parts, you then can predict the approximate strength from what it started at. In this example each piece of the bar would contain around 0.7 grams of active cannabis oil.

Everyone responds to edibles differently. So until you know your own tolerance, start with smaller doses.

Additional Notes
Long-term Storage: the 24oz tupperware is a cost effective method for creating the chocolate molds, and using the recipe above you can also fit 4 bars into a single tupperware. In the freezer these bars can last for at least 6 months.
When using Fruit & Berries: keep in mind that fruit and berries can reduce the shelf-life of your chocolate edibles. They should be always refrigerated, and consumed in no more than 1-2 weeks. Freeze your cannabis chocolate bar for longer storage.

I used to make something similar in California and it really helped my Rheumatoid Arthritis. Mine was not as pretty but it worked. I would eat this and go to sleep in a very relaxed way.

Now I'm in Malaysia, where it's a death penalty type of thing, so I can only look on and wish :)

Hi fitinfun!

I'm glad you found something that helped your RA. We used a sativa dominant strain so it is great for day time medicating / adventuring.

Yes please do not get into any drug issues in that part of the world. Wow that's a severe penalty for cannabis.

What's the reason you went to Malaysia from California? Also what are you doing to treat the RA now?

I left Cali a few years "to go off and see the world" So far that has been most of the countries in SE Asia. At the moment I grit my teeth for RA in all countries lol.

Interestingly, you can get all the narcotics and similar at pharmacies here. They will not give them to healthy people but I can talk to the head pharmacist and show my pain and joints and they bring it on. No doctor and VERY cheap.

I'm usually pretty good without much meds, but I'm in a huge flare for the last month. I got some muscle relaxers, narcotics, and steroids for about $5 that will last months. I'm a weakling on that stuff and cannot take it more than once a week. I break pills and take small amounts but they still make me crazy and confused. Then I'm hungover for a day or two.

I quit all the biologics and disease modifiers a few years ago. Too many close calls with death for my liking. I used to take all kinds of pills and shots. Now I just watch my joints deform and wish I had some weed. Sativa really worked for me in very small amounts and the indica to knock me out.

CBD is legal here but way out of my price range. I tried in San Diego - also too expensive - but it really works. I could rub it on nodules and they would shrink!

I should be in Sri Lanka. Apparently they use it heavily there for many conditions and in many preparations. Goals!

That is such an amazing thing, you traveling around the world. I hope the sheer wonder and beauty can offset any troubles and pain you have to face with RA.

I was supposed to visit SE Asia and totally chickened out. Flash forward a decade, and it's less likely i'll get there in the next 20 years.

I'm sorry about the RA flares. I understand that biologics come with risks, but they also can have a huge therapeutic response. It is a very interesting debate regarding using the most potent medications for the treatment of chronic illnesses. Do their benefits really outweigh the risks and side effects? Do they improve quality of life so much the negative impact is considered acceptable? And then there is family who can drive the decision rather than the member suffering from the disease.

I have family that is also out for a day when they take medications like those for pain treatment. My heart truly goes out to you.

Wishing you the best on your travels!!!

Those are constant issues in my ra and chronic pain groups. I took all kinds of stuff for 20 years and was always sick, in the er, in the icu, in the rehab, had infections, nearly dead, intravenous drips, - on and on. So I got off and now have all the other issues. But this is better for me.

What??? life is so great here. 1000000 times better than the us for me.

Yes it's strange how some of us react. This is why I cannot leave fb. My groups have 1000's of active people that will chime in about any drug or symptom. I need the support and help.

I'm debating taking 2.5 mg of prednisone tonight and I will get good sleep and be a freak for a couple of days. I need to clean and carry my laptop somewhere, so I might. I cannot do either of those things at the moment with weakness. I have online friends who take 20mg 2X a day or more.

This is really interesting. I feel like biologics are something that a lot of people swear by for relief of their symptoms. But clearly that isn't the case with everyone. I'm happy to hear you have found a balance.

Yes... I looking back, I see this as one of the biggest mistakes in my life.

I was still able to leave FB. There are other ways to connect to life minded people. But if you enjoy the groups on FB I think that is great!

This is so interesting. Most people I know who get prednisone, feel amazing after taking a dose. Either symptoms end, or they get energy and feel more able and active. Like a performance enhancing drug. Though the effects are short lived.

Hey BTW, thanks for teaching me about "quoting" using basic html coding!!!

You are welcome. This is such a learning curve here! I get roid rage on prednisone. The first time I did not know and after two weeks on a high dose I was flat out insane.

Biologics can work great for years and then kill you in 24 hours. I have been in groups where the member got sick and the next day a family member came in told us the person was dead. I came close a number of times in my last years on them.

SE Asia is still here - you should make the leap. I am really glad I did.

Many of the most successful medications can have serious mood alterations. We had to monitor our patients for suicidal ideation. And some others cause irreversible movement disorders (like parkinson's). But that's what people are willing to accept when there are no other options for their illness.

You will be happy to know that, SE Asia has been re-added to my bucket list!

Great video man :) THe bar looks great and delicious.

They got praise from all the family and friends. I will say that smaller smaller pieces are a good way to start. Lol they ended up being very potent chocolate morsels.

Yum! I'm going to make some right now. Just gonna melt a brick of baking chocolate into some infused coconut oil mmmm mmmm

Thanks medikatie. Not a bad chocolate creation you had on your post as well!

Thanks @massmedicinals! It was delicious. Have you ever tried chocolate shell that squirts onto iced cream and hardens? It's like that...dangerously good mmmm mmm now that you reminded me, I gotta go have some!

I haven't tried that before. For me it's really important to ensure all the edible is consumed. So I might not opt to warm and pour it over ice cream, only because there could be left over on the bowl. That's just my preference, and your suggestion sounds delicious for non-canna chocolate :)

Thanks for this! Ill be resteeming and promoting this in the canna server! You should stop in, we got some great things going on.

Thank you jonyoudyer for all the positivity and support. Happy to work to grow with you guys! Let me know how I can help.

How does it taste? :)
Curious reader here. haha

Since our butter had a very high ratio of cannabis to the coconut oil. The chocolate in my opinion might have a hint of a ganja taste to it. Not enough to bother anyone who has eaten it so far. Some said they could only taste the chocolate. And the chocolate does taste great, it's not milk chocolate so that might not be for everyone.

Let us know how it works out for you. If you can post a pic it would be great to see your finish product. Remember you can get creative with molding the bar. flexible ice cube trays can also work in a pinch, if you don't have a large enough tupper bin.

It is very yummy. Just don't go and eat too much in one sitting!
