The Gift That Keeps On Giving
Do you need to be "rich" to give back?
Often times money is the preliminary discussion around the idea of giving or any charitable action. Whether it's a conversation with a co-worker, friend, or family member, something is said about wanting to do right by a particular community and 'give back' and a statement follows, usually something along the lines of "yea, but you have to help yourself before helping anyone else." The conversation usually takes an abrupt left turn into a brick wall...ending rather anticlimactic to say the least.
Sound familiar?
My issue with this is:
- That statement takes no imagination.
- Little thought/effort is put into brainstorming or reverse engineering what it would take to solve even the smallest of issues in a local area.
- Lack of practicality & action.
My goal is that as the weeks unfold, anyone following our journey gains a new perspective and perhaps takes on a different approach next time someone brings up the idea of giving. Truthfully, one of the best ways of giving is with your time. As the Greek philosopher; Seneca said, “It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much...The life we receive is not short but we make it so; we are not ill provided but use what we have wastefully.” Rather than pondering, simply lending a helping hand or giving a voice to the voiceless can change a ton.
Another great way to make a dramatic impact is by thought...connecting like-minded individuals, teaching, and being vocal where it matters. I call this; "the gift that keeps on giving." It goes back to that cliche Chinese proverb; "Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime." Think about it...would you rather make a quick buck today, or be taught how to generate infinite value with passive income? Mindset is everything, so never overlook the opportunity of planting a seed that may one day grow. Not everyone has to be a revolutionary, but perhaps you spark the mind of an individual who will be.
