Lions, No Tigers, But Bears Oh My!
The reality of life is that real life is harsh. Humanity has tried to sugar coat life. We have tried to dull it's truth into something manageable. This has happened through disney movies and TV/Cable programming with the Anthropomorphism of mixing humans and animal characteristics. But animals are not humans and in a split instant you cannot reason with an animal who has decided upon its course of action.
This is why certain animals have time and again been pushed to the further reaches of human populations. 2300 years ago Alexander the Great wrote of confronting dragons in the wilderness. They existed in the wilderness because they were pushed there by human civilizations that would not allow them to coexist near villages and centers of human activity.
Nobody wants to live around an animal that can eat your children or livestock if it decides that's what's for dinner tonight.

Absolutely true. We are on the watch for a coyote who has now visited our property within 100 and less than 50 feet of the chicken coop twice. He has yet to do killing but he is in our sights now since we've done our due diligence of first, chasing him off, then second, chasing him off with a BB gun. This third time is sad to say, deadly force. I am not happy to go this route, but it is my duty to protect my chickens (and my chickens are desensitized to dogs - when they saw the coyote, they didn't even run... makes sense, I've got two dogs here). I am very much against senseless killing, but protection is a different story, hey, I haven't even gotten eggs from these turd chickens yet!
With coyotes it's always a battle. You don't want to kill them unless they become a direct threat. I have learned with research that they do a nightly roll call, if someone's missing, they get back to the reproduction, and pop out 7 more pups to replace the missing. This is why eradication has not worked. There is one benefit from coyotes however, they eat these damn ground squirrels! Wish they'd eat them faster. Haha. But sorry, coyotes, I can't have you scoping out the chickens. That's where I unfortunately have to draw the line and we will no longer be able to live in proximity peacefully.
The yotes will target livestock ONLY when they don't have enough wild game to go after. Livestock are a harder target usually because they have to contend with humans and guard animals. So its only when competition for wild game gets too hard do they go for livestock like newborn lambs, calves and chickens.
They have very few direct predators here so when you see them, shoot them. We will do some more videos this fall and winter on coyote hunting and calling.
Being in Canada we don't carry but we do have the same list of animals to worry about. Our deterrent is dogs five boxers to be precise and we have to build our chicken coops and shelters like Fort Knox and it seems to have worked for us upto now, fingers crossed. Love the show and keep doing what your doing as our whole family enjoys following your progress. 👍

Yes they can be but you learn to run fast. I've been told it's always advisable to go into the woods with a friend who is slower than you. Lol but at least we don't have snakes to worry about. 🐍
After I got out of the Army I said that I would never run again....unless something was chasing me. Then I got a Glock and took care of that problem.
I love it how you say my neighbor on the other side of the mountain... wish my neighbor lived that far.... but like you mentioned it comes with its downsides too, such as bears and mountain lions, too! Nonetheless, a beautiful place you live! I'm happy to hear you don't kill for fun, just for food and protection! Didn't know about the donkey! Again, a great and interesting video!
Yeah we love it too! thanks for commenting. Female Donkeys really do work great. We only had to get rid of ours because she was a bit skiddish around people. We will get another one once we improve some pastures around here.

Nice post talking about the wildlife. I remember the year that a young bear kept coming around. We had 4 young kids here at the time. I had to call the goverment to tell them about the bear. The CO lived just down the road so i thought it would be the best thing to do. I called the only number that was in the book, Got somebody who was about 500 miles away. Not much help. The local guy was away. So i called back the next day to tell them that if the bear came back i would shoot it. That got them all worried . So they called the the Co who was looking after this he was about 100 miles away. He said if i had to shoot go away. I got his number . Did not have to shoot. The bear did not come back.
Yeah, they only start showing up when you threaten to start throwing bullets...mostly because if there is gonna be action, they want in on it.
very good written and totally understandable, of cause you want to live with the land and keep nature as pure as you can with all its wildlife and creatures and plants but if its interfering with the well being of your family and livestock you have to take the appropriate measures and act upon it.
Yep, the world isn't a giant green M&M. Everything that grows out here will either bite ya, stab ya or stick ya.
We are stewards of the land. It's best to live in harmony with land's good and the bad. But...if the either get out of line...🥓🌭🌮🌯
