Whenever people hear the term “hair-follicle drug testing,” they automatically think of substances like cannabis, heroin, crack cocaine, or cocaine. They may even think about performance-enhancing drugs like anabolic steroids. But they very seldom think in this context about alcohol, the legal drug that is accepted by most of polite society. When a person has hair-follicle drug testing, alcohol usage can show up in the results, just as the use of cocaine does. Of course, for evidence of significant alcohol use to be left behind, the person needs to have been consuming more than one cocktail a day. One cocktail or a small glass of wine leaves a trace of evidence so small that it will most likely be overlooked by officials as not indicating heavy drinking.

Hair-follicle drug testing is a way officials can test whether the person has been consuming large amounts of alcohol frequently. The difference between hair follicle testing and urinalysis drug testing is that urinalysis does not show whether the person has been drinking heavily every day for a period of time. If the person being tested is aware of the timing of a urine test, they will simply abstain from drinking any alcohol for the brief period before the test. This way, their urine will show that they are clean and free of alcohol.

But hair-follicle testing gives evidence regarding a longer period of time than UA drug testing, especially when alcohol is the drug they are testing for. Some people assume that they can defeat the purpose of hair-follicle analysis by shaving their heads, but they do not take into consideration that hair actually grows all over their body. They have eyebrows, eyelashes, facial hair, underarm hair, hair on their legs, and hair even on their private parts.

The majority of employers test do drug testing before hiring, and some randomly check their employees. Schools, sporting teams, and athletic clubs do drug testing. Some states have even passed laws giving them the right to test for the presence of drugs in the systems of anyone applying for welfare. Given this environment, citizens might want to keep in mind the power of hair-follicle drug testing to detect ongoing drug and alcohol use.
