How football made me to believe again

Have you ever been rejected, denied, failed in something that you think you are good at. You felt like you are fighting alone in this journey to reach your potential. You feel like giving up? Before you do, I hope this story will give you hope & believe that anything is possible.

I started playing football when I was 10 as I grew interest in it. I was the smallest among the group. When I got selected to represent my school, I had a short rift with my school teacher, as we had too many homework given at a short space of time. That is when I lost my position for my school team, the same teacher who selected me.

My father, as any lower middle class parents group felt it somewhat a good situation I could focus in my studies. I somewhat had to accept that to happen. But, I was never satisfied with that outcome. When he had stroke as I was 13, somehow I was puzzled on my life directions. I kept on going. Even during high school, I was in the reserves or not in the squad. Simply because, I was not the fittest due to my size, nor the one that had great skills.

Then I was called to play for a team in indoor football competition or known as "Futsal". Little I realized I was good at it. To an extend I represented one of the top 32 teams in "Nike Street Soccer Competition" during the 2012 world cup. The feeling was good. During challenging competitions, we would end up in 2nd runner up. When I started my corporate career, the team I played became champions. But, that somehow did not complete my desire to compete in the real game of football on the pitch.

In 2014, a good friend of mine called me to give a try out for a football match for his university team. I did not hesitated. Although I doubted my capabilities, I decided to "give it a go once again". I was shocked to see the amount of capabilities & skills I developed throughout my time. Now, I felt somehow, my football career is complete to a certain degree of my satisfaction level, knowing that I had what it takes to compete to a certain level & I could go further if I pursued my career. Playing in a KV League here in KL, it somehow taught me certain values which I will carry on in my life.

  1. If you kept on trying, learning, adapting & give it a try, you will eventually make it
  2. Half of the battle begins in the mind, once you are firm in your objectives, the other half will follow accordingly
  3. Once you believe & put your time to invest on it, your status, physical attribute, or external factors would not be the factor that blocks your progress, rather you will be able to use the situation & what you have with you to your advantage.
  4. The closer you get to achieve your goals, the harder it gets & you would feel like giving up. That's when you will realize, you are getting there to what you want to achieve.
  5. You are the "God" in you. If you believe you will make it, you will do whatever it takes to earn it. If you don't, you will not make it. It may sound simple, but it is not. However, this is a great way to start with.

As 2017 is about to end, I believe some of you would start preparing for 2018 goals & objectives to achieve. I hope this post will give you some rough idea on how can you prepare yourself mentally to prepare for the goals & targets that you would set in 2018!.

In my next post, I will give some insights & ideas on how to set your targets & goals for 2018.
Until then, feel free to share your view on this.
