CAREER CHOICES: WHY YOU SHOULD FOLLOW YOUR PASSION
Today, I chanced upon a short post by @krishatnet on career growth and it reminded me of something very important. There are many reasons why people may pursue various career paths. Most common among them include: job security, high income, prestige/title, influence of parents/guardians and less often, passion for the said job. In most developing countries, unemployment is a huge concern. This unpleasant situation pushes a lot of youth into pursuing professional course such as medicine, nursing, medical laboratory science, teaching etc. This puts pressure on the government to employ the thousands of students graduating from various colleges and universities every year. Our educational systems has always been consistently flawed when it comes to training our youth to become entrepreneurs, to stand on their own feet and to build businesses for themselves.
From where I come, it is not uncommon to see parents making major life changing decisions for their children without any regard for what these children are good at or may want for themselves. Sometimes, some parents hide under the shadows of good parenting to push their wards to follow their foot steps. They want their children to accomplish the goals that they themselves some how failed at. They believe it is in the best interest of the child and sometimes it is. But in all this, it is crucial to stop every once in a while to consider what our children may actually be good at.
The good thing about following your passion, choosing a career that actually interest you or getting a job that makes you happy is that, you do not need anybody to motivate you. There is always that self-motivation to push harder. You would be surprise that you could easily make a career from some of the basic things you do everyday. It would be like building a job out of a hobby. I had this friend who loves playing video games. He once told me that if he could open a game center, where people would come around and play at a small fee, it would be the most accomplishing career for him. At first, i thought it sounded ridiculous. But come to think of it, I now see it is as feasible as any other job opportunity.
People who pursue careers for reasons other than their love for it can easily get frustrated, especially when things get a little hard. They begin to feel stressed by the job and are unable to cope for a long time. Depending on the circumstance under which you find yourself, you will not always be able to follow your passion, but if the opportunity ever presents itself, take it.
