Legend of the Callejón del Beso Guanajuato
Legend of the Alley of the Kiss
Every traveler who comes to this city asks for the Callejón del Beso, a place to which several legends are attributed.
The most surprising for its tragic and romantic taste of authentic legend, is the following:
It is said that Dona Carmen was the only daughter of an uncompromising and violent man, but as usual, love always triumphs as unfortunate as it may be.
Dona Carmen was courted by her beau, Don Luis, in a temple near the maid's home, first offering her holy water from her hand. When discovered discovered the confinement, the threat of sending her to a convent, and worst of all, marry her in Spain with an old and rich nobleman, which, in addition, would increase the father his depleted property.
The beautiful and submissive creature and her companion, Dona Brigida, crying and imploring together. Thus, before submitting to the sacrifice, they resolved that Dona Brigida would take a letter to Don Luis with the unfortunate news.
A thousand guesses were made by the young man in love, but of her, there was one that seemed the most successful.
A window in Dona Carmen's house faced a narrow alley, so narrow that it was possible, leaning out of the window, to touch the opposite wall with her hand.
If they managed to enter the frontier house, they could talk to their beloved and, between the two, find a solution to their problem.
I ask who was the owner of that house and acquired it at the price of gold
You have to imagine what was the surprise of Dona Carmen when, leaning on her balcony, she found herself at such a short distance with the man of her dreams
A few moments had elapsed from that indescribable love talk, for when the two lovers were more abstracted, violent phrases were heard from the back of the room. He was the father of Dona Carmen, rebuking Brigida, who judged life itself for preventing her master from entering her mistress's bedroom.
The father threw to the protection of Mrs. Carmen, as it was natural, and with a dagger in the hand, with a single blow the nail in the breast of his daughter.
Don Luis was dumbfounded by Dona Carmen's hand still in his, but increasingly cold.
Before the inevitable, Don Luis left a tender kiss on that smooth and pale hand, already without life.
For this reason, this place, undoubtedly one of the most typical of our city, is called the Callejón del Beso.
