Hostos philosophy In Education - Analysis of article “Eugenio Maria De Hostos 1839–1903”
Carlos Antonio Torre in his article “Eugenio Maria De Hostos 1839–1903” talks about Eugenio Maria De Hostos achievement in the different field and one of them is public education. It Explains how Hostos plays a major role in rebuilding the educational system and its philosophy and his effort that he puts to create a general curriculum that serves every individual needs no matter what kind of struggle the learner has. Torre makes a good point in discussing the importance of Hostos to the educational history and it’s a good example to learn what future teachers should consider while forming their philosophy of education.
Equality is what Hostos was looking for in his journey of spreading good and fit ideas and methods for the learner. He wanted to create an understandable system for a student that easy to gain and absorb. Human potential is what he focussed on in writing and developing his philosophy of education. According to the article, his researchers and knowledge about psychology and the human mind have what helped him comprehend the physical and mental needs of every child. His new way of thinking back then convert the nation into one “of the world’s most politically and educationally progressive.” Social and immoral elaboration is what he fought for, and he believed that education is beyond any religious and political involvement. Any outside intruder that could limit the amount and contents of educational resources and force the student to believe any information is not acceptable in the education process. Learning by hearing and reading wouldn’t necessarily help the student to understand a subject, so in addition to that, he make the material more visual and practical to digest the objects faster.
Getting out of the school in a field trip is more effective and helpful in shaping the children's view of the education. The student gets the chance to go outside the school to see the subjects and it's used in real life. In that way, the visual experience would transform the words into an actual sample that evaluate their understanding and improve their knowledge and their ability to be more creative. With the help of all five senses, the human has, the brain would be able to receive the information with fewer difficulties. Hostos teaching involved the three core activities of “thinking, feeling and loving”, so those three elements guide the child in his journey of learning. By reading this article, people get to understand that before we figure out what we shouldn’t do and instead of sticking and depending on the words only; we should try to know the other side thought the process and its special need that could help in making the task of receiving the ideas more comfortable and apparently.
