A couple of years ago I read a paper proposing deja-vu may be caused by a malfunction between the short- and long-term memory areas of the brain. Basically, they flip the order in which they catalog the memory so the long-term remembers it before the short term, so as the short term catches up your brain registers the event already being recorded by the long-term which makes it feel like you've already been there.
