Comics Journalism: No Country for Women

Beyond #MeToo Campaign: What does the battle for justice look like for young girls and women?

The Battles for Justice: No Country for Women is an illustrated dispatch from India on the women's struggle for justice from the times of the epic Mahabharata to the rise of a Hindu government and god-men in India. I wrote it as an outburst, some kind of desperate attempt to grapple with what was happening in the country.

This is an example of comics journalism, or graphic journalism if you haven't encountered one before. It's a personal and complicated reaction to the rare conviction of a god-man, who exploited women with impunity for more than fifteen years, and had armed goons, policemen and politicians in his pocket. His conviction resulted in the death of 38 people. In these 14 black and white pages, The Battles for Justice boils down the nation's complex feelings about what the judgment and the subsequent unrest and killings mean for the women's struggle for justice.

Originally published on Amazon, we've decided to publish it here so that the world can read it for free! This was a labor of love, and took hundred plus hours for both me and Anju, my younger sister, who illustrated my thoughts into a compelling visual narrative.

Is your country a safe place for women? How can we make it better? We'd love to hear from you!
